What's the advantage of an 8 core threadripper vs Ryzen? Is it memory bandwidth?

Being realistic, how many people using an 8 core AMD system care about pcie lanes though? Like if I have the money for 3 1080 Tis, why wouldn't I purchase a 6950X?

If you want a rig GPU render rig, a cheap (ish) 8 core with 64 (60) lanes may be a better option than a 12 or 16 core. Threadripper, 8 cores or no, should always beat any Intel CPU for a GPU render platform with 60 available lanes.

TBH, I feel it may cut into the Ryzen 7 numbers a little. A few hundo more and you get a much better platform .

    I don't know ...
But I suspect that all the 'sweetness' was binned Epyc and TR, and the silicon that did not exhibit those high-end characteristics was passed-on down the product stack.

I'm also thinking that 8-core TR, being originally binned for the upper end of the stack, will take a higher clock than has been seen with the 8-core desktop Ryzen.
