[News] AMD Ryzen Threadripper Delidded - It's EPYC

    https://www.techpowerup.com/235571/a...idded-its-epyc

Overclocker extraordinaire der8auer, who was one of the most vocal enthusiasts calling out for better VRM designs on Intel's X299 platform (and who worked with ASUS on redesigning the VRM cooling in its motherboards) has gone and done it: he delidded a Ryzen Threadripper CPU. And this delidding went on to deliver the goods: Ryzen Threadripper delidded is EPYC (pun intended.)

Instead of the expected MCM composed of two dies (with two CCXs of four cores per die, delivering the 16 cores we were expecting), Ryzen Threadripper is actually a much more interesting chip: it seems to be a full fledged EPYC chip, with four dies of eight cores. According to der8auer, when questioned, AMD confirmed that 16-core Threadripper 1950X CPUs are configured with two working eight core dies (four CCXs of four cores each), while the other eight-core dies are disabled by AMD.

those 4 dies should really hamper cashe speeds and memory performance compared to if it had two dies. half the cores wont even have direct memory access.

Two are dead. AMD claims they are spacers to support the heat sync. The two active dies are diagonal from each other, probably to spread the heat.

so you are saying we can unlock up to 16 extra cores and get a 32 core chip for under a grand. got it.

Read again - 4 dies, two fully functional dies, two disabled dies. I don't see how having two disabled/dead dies would hamper anything more since they don't do anything.

They didn't split the 16 cores across all 4 dies.

i thought it was 4 partially disabled dies when i first read it. so if it was 4x2x2 it would have been really nasty. 2x2x4 should be way better.

    No 4x2x2 or 2x2x4.

    8 x 8 x 0 x 0 = 16
    6 x 6 x 0 x 0 = 12
    4 x 4 x 0 x 0 = 8

I read the only reason AMD put the other two on the CPU was as a spacer for the heatsync so it won't buckle or get deformed.

Well for starters lets not overanalyze. Simple thinking 2 dies kitty cornered with an IHS is physically unstable. The tendency to rock in production could potentially chip a core.

The info i will share is solely based on the very basics of ocing. In order to OC you must cool. In order to cool properly you must know what you are trying to cool "the source of the heat".

Since the "real estate" is big the potential to miss is far greater.

I dredged this up off the net.......without violating any NDA why not make an educated guess based on the "connections" which 2 cores are best to use in a desktop for performance reasons....

bottom left would be the triangle indicator denoting "top" mounted upright in a motherboard.
