If it's between 1080 and 1080 Ti it's a fail.
Not because it's bad, if nVIDIA stopped at the Ti it would be fine.
But nVIDIA has the Titan Xp, and the new gen Volta GV100, GV102, GV104 coming anytime they... want ( I wouldn't write out a GTX 2080 in late 2k17 ).
Seeing what GV100 stands for, only raises concerns.
Just look at the numbers.
AMD needs a big jump in the GPUs similar to that of Ryzen.

I don't think Intel's thoughts had changed and I don't think Huang's will either. Ryzen is a success can't deny that and even if it is 1080 Vega will also be a success but neither Intel nor Nvidia will be afraid to cut some very very high profits. Intel's first quarter revenue is higher than AMD's market cap!!! and Nvidia's is 7 times bigger so AMD needs to push them constantly for a long time to make them afraid.

Polaris did it's job though. At the time of launch, most people did not think it worth the price premium to get a GTX 1060 over a RX 480. Reason being the 480 was more than sufficient for 1080p gaming, but neither was truly great for 1440p. You'd want a 1070 at that point. Should note that today it is possible to find a 1060 at $200, which is actually a pretty fantastic deal.
If you recall, AMD did take a fair amount of graphics market share between June and October of last year. The problem was it's Big Brother, Vega, was just supremely delayed. That allowed Nvidia to bankroll all the high end enthusiast and professional workstation market into giant profits, which in turn lets them invest more R&D capital. It's one of those negative feedback cycles of not having anything to compete in the high margin segments.
I've said multiple times that AMD literally just needs a paper launch to suppress Nvidia's pricing. People will think twice about spending $1200 on a Titan Xp if they know Vega offers 90% of the performance for $700 - but includes waiting a bit. Problem is I don't think Vega has performed as well as expected, hence the silence.
Even if it surpasses the Titan Xp, it won't be able to cope with the GV100 & GV102 GeForce variants.
It better close the gap at least, so we can see a chance of an AMD high end comeback in the future.

I think it depends on the perspective of who is going to be buying Vega.
If you have a 1080 right now is it going to be worth upgrading? Doesn't seem that likely.
However if you have a 980 (nvidia) or 480(AMD) - yeah I think Vega would be worth upgrading to.
Question is how big of a market is that? I dunno. Guess we will have to wait and see.
But I agree that based on when it's being released the product should be at least a 1080Ti level - otherwise most other people that already have 1080s, 1080Ti's, and Titans are going go "meh" and not bother with it.

Agreed, but GV100 is a good year away. AMD can deal with Volta when it actually hits the market.
Right now they need to stop the bleeding. There's not a single person on this forum that would consider buying an AMD card if their gfx budget was $500. That's a major problem, and it's only going to allow Nvidia to continue expanding their technology lead until they at least have literally a single card that competes in the enthusiast segment.
Nobody would hesitate to splash even $900 on a high end AMD gpu, as long as it is competing or exceeding nVIDIA's current offering.
GV100 is approx a year away, GV102 nope.
And in a simple refresh ( if they even make it, they haven't been that successful even in terms of refreshing the chip lately ) the Vega if it's in 1080 Ti territory won't make it to GV102 territory.

And 980ti... I wont bother Vega too
And another pov having the best card in the market is important too. While people like us don't bother things like that most people choose cards based on false assumptions like if a brand has the best card on the market than I should get that brand on mid and low range. That is why AMD pushed x2 cards on the market and claim we have the best one card solution.

We need the past... nVIDIA GF4 Ti4600... boom, AMD 9800PRO ( and XTX ? my memory is failing hahaha ).
Every few months a change in the top.
Can we have this again ?

I upgraded to 9700pro from a Ti4200 and then a 9800pro then x800pro. And I clearly remember I bought a 9800pro for my friend after burning his asus 5800... which was replaced by a 5900 or 5950 (something like this) after a month... good old times.

The relative size of each company is also worth keeping in mind. Nvidia is now making billions of dollars a year while AMD has been losing millions and only now leveling out. Back when it was Ati vs nvidia the two companies were both making a similar amount of money (until around the 1800 - 2900 days for ati). The best engineers in the world can't design a chip with no budget.

Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.
Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.
Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.
Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.
Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.
Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!
Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.
