I remember the time that first Vega rumours begun to spread. At that time the thing was will it be better than 980ti or between 980 and 980ti. Now we have 1080ti an titan xp and Vega started to compete with them while 1080ti gives %80 - %100 (mostly) more performance than 980ti. What is going on? What concerns me is if AMD is pushing Vega to its limits by risky and manipulative moves to compete with 1080ti or titan xp? Nvidia have thw power to do things like this but AMD!!! There are lots of carnivores who waits for a little mistake from AMD to eat them alive.

I wouldn't be surprised if the chip they are launching now is a completely different beast then then what they had last year. But yeah, I'm sure nvidia could have dealt a death blow by now.

Completely different would be difficult. If the engineering team envisioned launching last year to compete with the 1080 when they drew up the initial milestone plans years ago, I don't think they would have allocated headcount for significant modification. Typically the engineers on that program would instead be concerned about production ramp up and any last second software fixes this time of year.

I can see doing driver modifications and general tweaks for more performance though.

    Reference:
I helped launch the 2017 F250 Super Duty (currently work in research now though).

    Well, that's nice. I'm jealous.
