    HELP Computer shuts down / hard chrash

    During timespy loop, the PSU trips off from what appears to be an overvolt protection. Watts at the wall (120v socket) hover around 890-1000W.

    PSU is SeaSonic 1200W (100AMP 12v)

    Rig in the signature.

    Only crashes when GPU's are overvolted to 1212mv and running 1200 core. When I run at stock speeds/clock, no crash.

    Processor is OC to 4.2 but HT is off.

    Am I pulling too much power through the PSU or is it faulty?

    change your psu.
    based on this calculator http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator your psu is not enough...

    But wall is only pulling 800-900 watts. Sometimes a little over 1000 but at ~%80-87 efficiency, that should only equate to 800-900 watts at the PSU, right? 100A 12v rail should be enough, no? What am I missing? I'm %100 with you that this is a PSU issue just not sure why these specs aren't enough (assuming the PSU isn't bad).

    That calculator says I need a 1500w supply

    its seasonic psu should be capable of that. psu might be faulty. you can borrow same rated psu just to check if its does the same thing. just to rectify where the problem is........

    They run just fine in games and 3D Mark

    I looking to get a FSP BoosterX 450 W and run two GPU's on the two 8 pin connectors. That would offload up to 300W from the SEASONIC onto the BoosterX. The issue is the seller wanted $299... I got him to lower the price to $99 but that's a lot of money to "test" out the theory.

    Big issue is, if I get a new PSU, it has to be the same length or shorter. With a 240mm rad mounted on the bottom of the case, I have about 1mm space between the PSU and radiator.

    I've been using the VisionTek Juice Box VT-450CD 450W for 10 yrs.
    Made by FSP works great.Paid $100 brand new ,I believe its 85%@ 300w
    Powered sli 285's & 580's
    Main psu is corsair HX650

    Ha! I just bought a FSP BoosterX 300watt. I'm running it to two 6 pins on two cards so it should only be running at ~150W. GPU's are now running at 1226 and I think I have more head room; going slowly. Before, 1213 core artifacted and shut down. 1200 just shut down. So it definately was a power issue.

    But it doesn't make any sense at all.

    The maximum watts I'm meausring at the wall is about 1020W, with average around 950 - 970 watts. Assuming ~%90 efficiency (the Seasonic is Platinum rated IIRC) this means the peak load on the PSU is ~920ish watts. 1200 should be plenty. And this is calculated with the FSP 300W boosterX (uses the same power strip) which would incure even more power loss in efficiency so peak load requirements are probably a few watts lower.

    Is my PSU bad? I have plenty of case circulation and CPU/GPU's are watercooled

    I know back in the day some PSU's were unable to completely load the 12V rail without a large enough load on the 5V and/or 3V rail... Is that still an issue? Only running two SSD's.

    Those ti's are prob close to 800w clocked,cpu 350w plus drives,pump and fans.You prob push it hard for too long. I would plug the two 8pin connectors to the third card,The booster is good for 350w 24/7.Was that 1020 during furmark+prime,30 min test should tell us something,lets see what happens then.

    I was only pulling high 900's and low 1000's watts at the wall. With the aux PS connected (two 6 pins so should be ~150w total load on the aux unit), it runs great but the measured wattage at the wall never goes near 1100 watts, much less 1200. It stays in the high 900's with peaks into the 1000's during the Heaven bench.

    I used to max at around 1200-1213 overclock due to artifacts and crashing. Last night I was almost at 1300 core and watts still stayed well below 1100 at the wall.

    12v rail still close to 12 right , it might be dying

    I believe you might be drawing to many Amps on that 12v rail, isn't 3 780ti's like 90amps by themselves.

    So same issue still persisting.

    What I've done so far: Got a brand new Booster X5 450W drive bay VGA power supply and have one card running off this by itself.

    For the 1200W SeaSonic I have two cards running with an individual PCI-E cable fore each 6 and 8 pin (no 8 pin with six pin piggyback cable).

    I can now draw a little more power before it trips, at around 1100w at the wall. The wall is a 120V 15A and should be good up to 1800W.

    Can this be something on the cards themselves? The bios is set to 200% power draw; do I need to mod it for more? 1.3V is my goal but I can barely get 1.212...


    Could it be a bad surge protector? I just ordered an 1800W line conditioner with voltage regulation.

    it seems you were amps limited.... cards were pushing seasonic lot more harder then watts.
