Ryzen XFR Demo Leaked - 4.1 GHz Boost Speed

Looks like someone broke NDA by posting a video that included 1800X's XFR setting.

You can see the XFR part roughly 17 minutes in.

I guess I'm slightly disappointed. In fairness, AMD did claim +100~200 MHz increments for XFR. I originally thought that meant the step size, but I guess that means XFR behaves more similarly to Intel's Max Turbo Boost 3 than a true self-overclocker. Will reserve 3rd party reviews before making final judgement; however, this combined with the 5.2 GHz LN2 run implies 8-core Ryzen does not have much overclocking headroom.

Having said all of this, let's not forget 4 GHz stock is still way faster than anyone expected for the 1800X - where stock v. stock it beats the 6900k.

To me this XFR is a gimmick just like Intel's turbo, I like fixed frequency. I'd not take it serious concerning Ryzen's overclocability.

It was fun while it lasted, some people thought that they change from Heatsink A to heatsink B then to C and then to Watercooling and see different clocks and not in steps but in fine frequency changes.
Was too good to be true anyway, and would require more engineering work put into it, engineering time wasted it would've been.

Isn't NDA supposed to be lifted today?? Want reviews already!!

On the other hand we got massive price cuts from Intel incoming. I had forgotten how good competition was...

I think those price cuts are only the start. AMD reduced the AM2 prices just prior to Conroe's launch, and then had to continue drastically cutting them as time went on.

I do want to temper expectations a bit though: I don't think Ryzen has that much overclocking headroom. That doesn't mean the 1700X isn't exceptional value; but I don't want people expecting that you'll be able to overclock it to 4.5 GHz on standard cooling. These leaks combined with the pricing (as well as the RX 480 pricing) just leads me to believe AMD would have priced it higher if it could holistically beat Intel's offerings.

Again, that doesn't take away from Ryzen's value - I just don't want massive backlash if the Hype machine gets too strong. I also imagine clockspeed overhead will progressively improve as they refine the manufacturing process.

I'm mostly hoping for a very overclockable 1600X and since the rumour is that it will have 4.0Ghz boost clock, I am hopeful. If the thing can reach at least 4.3-4.4 Ghz on air it will sell like hot cakes, and +1 for me even.

I don't think that's a rumor; I saw that mentioned on one of the AMD tech day slides.

I personally would take a 1700 (assuming they overclock reasonably well) and just ride it up to 4 GHz. I don't care about power consumption, and long term don't think you'd benefit as much from .3 GHz as you would from 2 extra cores.

    edit:

Thanks! I imagine the 1600X will be the sweetspot for gaming price/perf wise.

    I hate the internet.

Not only are some of those prices inaccurate, but some that are accurate have been like that for weeks. The 6800k at Microcenter for example has been lower than where it's at now for example. PCPartspicker used to show their prices, and if I remember correctly that CPU was down to about 320, with the 5820 at like 300 at the lowest. And the current price of 360 or whatever it is is actually not that low compared to the past few weeks.

But whenever anyone says anything on the internet I guess it's true....
