[News] NVIDIA to Steal AMD's Ryzen Limelight on Feb 28

    https://www.techpowerup.com/230796/n...ight-on-feb-28

NVIDIA could attempt to steal the limelight from AMD's 2017 "Capsaicin & Cream" launch event for its Ryzen desktop processors, slated for February 28, with a parallel GeForce GTX event along the sidelines of the 2017 Game Developers' Conference (GDC). At this event, the company is expected to launch its next enthusiast-segment graphics card, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. This could at least be a paper-launch, with market availability following through in March.

While the GTX 1080 Ti is a graphics card, and Ryzen a processor (they don't compete), NVIDIA's choice of launch-date could certainly steal some attention away from AMD's big day. Besides launching Ryzen, it wouldn't surprise us if AMD teases its upcoming Radeon "Vega" graphics cards a little more. The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is expected to be based on the same "GP102" silicon as the company's flagship TITAN X Pascal graphics card, and could be positioned very close to the USD $1,000 mark, given that NVIDIA priced the TITAN X Pascal at a wallet-scorching $1,199.

Which do I care about more, a graphics card that is ridiculously priced, or a CPU and possibly a GPU that together combined cost the same or less than that graphics card?

    .... yeah.

MSRP $1000 won't get anything more than a hot bowl of farts from me.

Now 1080 Ti @ $650 would not only catch my attention, but have me rethink my next purchase.

lol but why is that unreasonable? 980 Ti was $650; only reason 1080 was so absurdly priced was because it had no competition.

Vega should at minimum driving down the price points.

    "GP102"

Sad times for the enthusiast when AMD's latest offering can be countered by the 102. Looking at past launch dates, it's been a while since AMD launched anything that was up right up there.

AMD can fight on price and will force a reshuffle in pricing from the green team but I was kind of hoping for something that would truly push nVidia.

I'm not quite getting this stealing the limelight from Ryzen, as Ryzen is a completely different ballgame in the CPU market. Ti will cast a shadow over Vega, that's for sure. Will the shareholders care, I dunno, but the enthusiast in me is not the happiest person right now.

What's the point? They don't even sell x86 CPUs. ...unless they also expect AMD to launch Vega???

You are completely right, they don't want to steal AMD's spotlight but rather free ride on the sales boosts that Ryzen will provide. Pairing Ryzen with 1080Ti will be an attractive system for many.

I can't see that making sense. Why would a budget minded person get a 1080 Ti? The whole attraction of Ryzen is that it's within reasonable margin of Broadwell-E (at least in games + non AVX2 apps) and wayyyyyyyyyy cheaper.

If you want the best of the best, wouldn't getting a 7740k or 6950X make more sense (depending on what applications you run, of course)?

Let's wait and see but the way I see it is you get more performance for your money which you can use for investing on that video card. I doubt Ryzen will be positioned only for the budget oriented.

Speaking only for myself: Different priorities for different components.

I'm (potentially) willing to spend $650 on a GPU. I'd rather spend ~$400 - ~$450 (AKA what cut-down big dies used to cost...), but I could be coaxed into $650 for the right card.

I will never spend $1,000+ on a CPU, unless I suddenly start making $300,000+ a year.

Maybe I'm weird, but my sweet spot is $250 - $400 for CPU, ~$400+ for GPU.

For the record, I intend to upgrade my 2500K to a Ryzen 1700X.
