This is a big deal over at r/android

Apple, meanwhile, still stuck on a minor beta version and cant move on...

Reports of consumer unsatisfactions topping the charts.

Ehh reddit complains about everything; really couldn't care less about their whining (and false perspective of being indicative of the majority).

The article says you can change it between QHD, FHD and HD. Is it annoying that you have to change it? Sure. Do I think 95% of users will even notice/care? Probably not.

    577 ppi pixel density /2 = 288 ppi(HD)

    Iphone 7 is 326 ppi

Kinda sad a Fully Crippled S7 @HD is about the same as a normal Iphone and the rollback is to FHD which is higher than Iphone.

being pentile OLED the ppi is a big disingenuous. it is really closer to 350 and the shrink to 1080 will actually make things better if they are are multicolored.

edit, with how android N works if you set the native render to the same as the scaller would have been it works quicker, and in this case it would be around 1080p for native rgb on a pentile 1440p screen so it would be better to just render that instead of rendering higher with a scaller.

I didn't take into consideration the sub pixels of the OLED vs IPS 577 PPI drops to 384 using 1/2 subpixel on red and blue. 1080p drops to 216 PPI which is kinda low. If course this all depends on what colors are being produced too.

you can change the scaling and that emulates ppi (so it is measured in ppi) and with pentile screens you have a native ppi rating and an rbg equivalent ppi rating. most phones with pentile screens can run a lower rgb resolution as a native resolution so if you take a 1440p panel and run it in rgb like mode it will run a lower resolution but still look native. since most people use a ui that is larger than native it makes sense to just do that.

they also have a 1440p option in the options if you run a smaller UI.
