Paper launch July 30th...my money's down for 1st week Sept before the majority of consumers have them in their hands...who knows when AIB partners will release them? October? Only 16 months and counting since the 1080...

So basically its no different than when i worked out how to "score" better and only focussed on actual performance on my fury x.

I have to say results even without throttling in the mix are a bit disappointing. I may hold off. Undecided at this point.

Throttling is a non concern. I have been dealing/working through it since 290x..

Game performance though...I hope they have some driver magic left to tap into.

It does make me feel better about not being able to upgrade my PC this year.

I wouldn't be paying the current inflated pricing of cards right now anyway. Ridiculous.

I'm not sure that's really a good thing. With nvidia getting such little competition from AMD I'm expecting the next generation Volta cards to enter a new pricing bracket. Wouldn't be surprised to see a $800 base model, then $1500 Titan, and finally $1200 Ti...that will mean AMD can then justify increasing their prices for Navi.

Maybe not as much as lets say Fury, they have been working on this a long long time. I'd be surprised if the drivers are immature.

I would boycott them, that is the way of indirectly say, "hey, we are not going to buy it at that price", only idiots are buying GPU's at these prices or at prices higher than Pascal generation. I mean, if GTX 1170 costs more than $500 then we must not buy it.

Nah, not really. You have to pay to play. I can't remember that ever being any different, and I've been in the game since late nineties on the PC front.

Then I will buy a lightning or kingpin 1080ti. It will be enough for my 3440x1440 for a long time.

Seems like NV prices are lowest when ATI/AMD had a competitive product.

I think those prices can be misleading...

Also have to factor in supply/demand, timing of buy, where and who you are buying from, and what price gougers have on influence of the price. I remember when you could buy a top of the line card for say $300, and now you're looking at closer to $600-$700. To me prices overall seem to be climbing and I don't see that changing any time soon.

On a side note, what's going to stop Nvidia from charging more now? Because I think we all have a pretty good idea what Vega is going to bring. If you want the best may have to pay an additional premium for whatever nvidia releases next.

I agree with you on most of that, those prices are just a snap shot, but they are release day prices, so they do hold a value of sorts. Of course prices have gone up slightly, but then again, isn't just about everything more expensive nowadays. What the previous 17 years have shown is that there is very distinct price slots for particular graphic cards. But then again, supply and demand also works in favour of that argument.

My comment was more along the lines of for the best part of the last 2 decades you had to pay dearly to play with the latest and greatest. Becoming a member of the PC master race, especially when you were young, took a lot of your hard earned pennies! Voodoo 2 SLI comes to mind! $500! But then again, if you take in account Quantum3D Voodoo cards, you'd be selling your car + kidney lol.

But I am quite interested in what high end card you could buy for $300? Perhaps in the hey day nineties, but I can't think of a flagship card in 'modern' history for $300? Certainly not on release date.

Anyway, I suppose we're digressing, I blame AMD lol

I should have phrased that better. Not "top of the line", but at least "top tier". I was thinking more of the Geforce 2 GTS - obviously the Ultra was better, but the price tag was higher with it, and the GTS was still a very good card from nvidia at the time.

Agreed, I could only afford the Geforce 2 Titanium (ironic name looking back) but that was a great budget card and played all my games I wanted to play. Still got the card and box too!

Not quite so long ago the ATI HD 4870 launched at $300 iirc (2008).

It wasn't much later after launch a price war ensued and I got my brand new 4870 512MB for around $200 ish (the 1GB was still higher of course)

My first ever prebuilt PC had a GF 2 Ti in it; that computer ran all my games worry-free. Hard lesson came afterwards when I had to replace it(burned out on me) with a FX 5200 and learned that the newer card gave me a spectacularly ty experience, despite it being three generations newer.

PS: Thanks for confirming that those cards did exist. I recall having a rant on one of these forums because someone insisted that the GF 2 Ti in my system never existed(to be fair, the wiki page at that time never mentioned a Ti in the product lineup).

IIRC The Radeon r9800 really shocked the world I think it launched at 400 at a time when the GeForce 4600 was over 500. A few months later you could find that card under 300 bucks and it was years before a faster card came out from anyone. First time I recall ati ever really being considered a competitor to Nvidia. Was pretty sad when that card died. I had a thermaltake big typhoon mounted on it and vmodded to hell! LoL

yep, there's a reason why the last Nvidia card I had was a 460. I would never, ever pay over $400 for any part in a pc.

I guess I would never upgrade again if components started to cost that much.

I guess you don't play games much by still using that card. I'd go insane if I was still playing on a 460 lol.

Unless you're buying video cards 2nd hand years after the original product release not sure you're going to have much luck in the future finding any top tier cards under $400.

a midrange card like the 460 would be like a 1070 now and would MSRP around $400.

Even though RX Vega is being launched today, apparently no sites have review samples.

    Edit:

There ya go, AMD with it's pants down. 2 Aug for final bios, but no date listed for ramping production.

Yeah I wasn't kidding when I said majority of consumers won't have cards in hand until September. For AIB partners could be October.

Yeah, sure seems that way. I think for the average Joe to get his hands on this card it's going to take a while. Do be honest, if they wanted to, nvidia could probably launch a pascal refresh and make Vega DOA. But would it be worth it. I'm sure they could, and even make a tidy profit, but perhaps they just want to focus on Volta from here on.
