[News] Intel "Coffee Lake" Company's First 6-core Mainstream SKU

    https://www.techpowerup.com/227978/i...mainstream-sku

Intel's upcoming "Coffee Lake" micro-architecture, or the 9th generation Core processor family by Intel, is scheduled for launch in the second half of 2018. It succeeds the 8th generation "Cannon Lake" family of notebook processors (which likely doesn't see a desktop launch), and the 7th Gen Core "Kaby Lake" socket LGA1151 processors slated for January 2017. While it's not known if mainstream desktop "Coffee Lake" chips will continue to be based on the LGA1151 socket, the possibility is diminishing, looking at a platform layout diagram leaked to the web by Benchlife.info, supported by new connectivity interfaces coming out of the CPU package. The biggest selling-point of "Coffee Lake," is its core-count.

The 9th generation Core "Coffee Lake" family could introduce Intel's first 6-core processor to the mainstream desktop platform. The company's first 6-core client part was launched in its LGA1366 HEDT (high-end desktop) platform with the Core i7 "Gulftown" processor, way back in 2010. An increase in core-count from 4 has eluded the mainstream-desktop lineup. The 6-core "Coffee Lake" silicon will be built on a highly-refined 14 nm node by Intel, with a die-size of 149 mm?. Quad-core parts won't be carved out of this silicon by disabling two cores, but rather be built on a smaller 126 mm? die. For reference, the quad-core "Kaby Lake" die is expected to be 123 mm?, and the current quad-core "Skylake-D" die measures 122.6 mm?.

awesome, so powerfull CPU for this chipset, nice! Maybe because Zen? Zen is not fighting directly at X99 segment, but for Z170/X70/B150/Bx50 segment of CPU/chipsets

Well it cant be coincidence that intel proposes 6 core mainstream cpu in this timeframe where zens launch is somewhat nearby.
No amd competition for like a decade and intel actually went back from 6 cores to 4 cores , zen is on the horizon and boom, 6 cores on mainstream. Not that they couldnt do damn 10 cores now.But its a start.

Why couldn't they bring it to the 1150?

    Why should they? ^

    Still no reason to upgrade, meh;

Wait, Are they actually coming back to 1155 roots?! WOW! Shows how shiт the latest CPUs have been!

    According to the source
If Intel 6 gen Processors were the best Intel CPUs ever made, then Coffee lake would qualify for it as the best contender.
So, there might be an actual improvement coming.

It also aligns with NV Volta arch. which is also a big Tick in gpu industry.

Sounds a bit promising, considering 6 core chips have already become mainstream in the high end department ~400$ range. So 6 core cpus definitely wont be the biggest selling point of Coffee Lake in high end cpu department unless the family is strictly aimed towards mainstream market, which is what I fear the most.

Intel started changing sockets every generation back around when Bulldozer came out. It was basic economics: if customers have no choice but to buy Intel for high end performance, why not force them to also get a new motherboard?

Am I reading that article right? That it's stating that Cannonlake "likely doesn't" come out on desktop?

Which would mean on desktop from Intel we'd have Kabylake in Q1 2017 and then Coffeelake to look foward to in Q3 2018?

If so, that's the first time I've heard that before.

Imagine programmers what they need to do every each time, for each sockets writing complete new cpu microcode
