    [News/Rumor] AMD's high-end X370 chipset teased, arrives in Feb 2017

    http://www.tweaktown.com/news/53862/...017/index.html

AMD will be launching its next-gen Zen architecture in February 2017, alongside a new high-end X370 series chipset. The news is coming from Benchlife, teasing the Bristol Ridge series of APUs based on the Excavator CPU architecture, and GCN 3.0-based graphics architecture.
The upcoming AM4 socket will be split into three different chipsets, with the high-end X370 leading the way, and behind it we have the B350 and A320 chipsets. The Zen FX-based CPUs will be part of the upcoming Summit Ridge family of processors, including PCIe 3.0 support, dual channel DDR4 memory controllers, lots of L3 cache, updated storage features including USB 3.1 and NVMe, and more. We can also expect to see CPUs arrive with between 4/8 cores with 8/16 threads, and consuming between 65-95W of power.

Motherboard makers are already reportedly building their inventories of X370-based motherboards, with companies preparing to unveil some of their AM4 motherboards in October. AMD will most likely show off their Zen CPUs and new X370 chipset during CES 2017 in January.

OK, so the new build should look something like...

    Zen
    X370
    NVMe SSD
    RX490

Assuming it all lives up to expectations, of course.

At least now we have a launch month . . . for Summit Ridge and X370.

dual channel memory does not seem like enough if they want to target workstations with NVME storage. it should be fine for gaming but i want to see socket 2011 get challenged.

What tangible benefits, really, does quad channel bring?

Besides, that would be a target for the Opteron segment.

for desktop/gaming nothing, for workstations or servers running multiple nvme drives it offers a lot. yes that is the opteron segment, but they are so far going to only have the normal desktop chip with a 2p version, and a g34 style multi die chip that supports 2p(+?) with quad channel but only since it is 2 cpus on one socket. also, keep in mind that workstations run jdec ECC so if you are running that quad channel is a big deal even for gaming in that config. it also helps that you can run 8 sticks on workstations, with ecc it is much cheaper to get 8GB sticks than 16GB sticks ATM.

If the 8 core chip has dual channel memory, I'd wager a guess that a 16 core will have quad channel.

If you're choosing a desktop CPU for a server that needs extra memory bandwidth and ECC memory, well, that's your own fault

AMD Readies X370 High-end Chipset for "Summit Ridge" Processors

AMD is readying three motherboard chipsets for its next-generation socket AM4 desktop platform. With its 7th generation A-series "Bristol Ridge" APUs, the company launched the A320 mainstream and B350 premium motherboard chipsets, while keeping a better-endowed high-end chipset under the wraps, which makes its debut with the ZEN "Summit Ridge" processors. It turns out that this chipset is the AMD X370. The X370 chipset will debut with the first ZEN "Summit Ridge" processors along the sidelines of the 2017 International CES, next January.

AMD "Summit Ridge" desktop processors, much like the 7th generation A-series APUs they share the platform with, are SoCs, in that the chips combine the entire platform core-logic along with the CPU and its relevant uncore components. AMD is still giving this platform a sort of chipset, which adds to the number of SATA, USB, and general-purpose PCI-Express connectivity that the processor gives out. The AMD X370 should feature more 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 ports, SATA 6 Gb/s ports, 32 Gb/s M.2 or U.2 ports, and general-purpose PCIe lanes than what the B350 offers. This chipset should drive motherboards that are ready for multi-GPU setups.

CES would make sense even if it is just a paper launch.

    CES = January
    Article in OP says February

So they might paper-launch or tease at CES but . . . yeah we'll see.

in the past amd has released cpus a month or more before motherboards are out that will take them.

Though that shouldn't be the case this time around as AM4 is launching next month with bristol ridge.

in the past amd has had one platform for 1/2p systems, and those workstation applications would run jdec speed ram. for gaming you can just overclock or run tight timings, but right now even the intel 2p systems with quad channel have ram bandwidth problems with NVME.

You couldn't get an Athlon or Phenom or FX in a 2P system, so no, it wasn't one platform for 1P/2P. That was only ever Opteron territory.

socket 940 was both on the same socket. but intel socket 2011 is the same platform but they have the qpi unlocked for 2p, and on amd i though that they just added the pins for the HTT buss to diferenciate the socket am3 and socket F/c32. they use the same cores.

anyways jdec ram and NVME could be an issue for dual channel with 8 cores and good clock speeds.

939 had Athlons and 1P Opterons (good old Opteron 165 days, I had one). 940 was Opteron only with the exception of the Athlon FX-51, which was Opteron based. FX53 was SledgeHammer, socket 939 like other Athlon 64s. Man, that was a while ago, good old days. Had a San Diego Athlon 64 3700+ that I cranked up to 2.86GHz to just beat the $800 FX-57, then the Opteron 165 I pushed all the way to 2.8GHz 24-7 stable. Ran them on my Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe board. Man, good times.

I'm not as well versed on AM3 vs F and C32.

you could get the clawhammer a64 on socket 940 as well before 939 came out, but then they stopped selling them. i think i did confuse platform with architecture a bit though. since i went 2011 i just lump things in my head the same like intel does now.

Honestly maxing out an NVME drive has got to be the most luxury problem there is. I can't think of a scenario where I would even care if I got less performance than my current drive (m500... or m550.. whatever).

video/content editors would benefit from nvme.
