Thumbs down Upgrading from Tri Sli 480's to GTX 980 Questions

My backup gaming rig is showing its age current specs are

    Asus R3E
    Intel 980x
    3x GTX480's

My question is this if I upgrade to say a singe GTX 980

    1) Will it be about the same performance as the 3x GTX 480's
    2) Will the 980x be holding back the performance?

It's hard to estimate the performance of 3x480 for different games, you really have to do this research yourself and benchmark certain engines to compare agains the 980, which has benchmarks all over the place atm so should be easy to find. As for the 980x holding back performance, is it at stock clock ? If so I'd say it's already holding back performance on your tri-sli setup, and more so than it would on a single GPU setup.
