Release of Intel 14nm Broadwell desktop CPUs due for Q2 2015

This might not be really new news, but I was wondering how the desktop Broadwell release was tracking.

For those of us crunching World Community Grid (WCG) 24/7, the power savings from 14nm might provide a reason to upgrade from Sandy/Ivy Bridge machines.

Hard to build up excitement about Broadwell if Skylake is coming just a few months after.

CPU release speed is high, actual CPU speed increases are small.

Heh, I'm still rocking my circa 2009 CPU and have no intention of upgrading. The desktop cpu market is one of the most boring markets in the entire IT arena, talking about a disappointment. Ever since AMD started getting paid to create under performing CPUs (I honestly can't believe that AMD engineers cannot to this day create a cpu with a better IPC than the 6 year old bloomfield arc; the very same guys who could easily dominate their opposition just a few years back) it's a rather embarrassing show.

So yeah I don't look forward to the broadwell release. Intel these days is glorified semiconductor manufacturer who can create crazy small transistors who also dabbles in processors (but doesn't act as if it is their main job, they don't need do actually, for reasons that I explained) and that's about it ... peace

I will happily admit that at 3915Mhz, my Q9650 is still ripping up most modern gaming titles, but it *is* showing its age/FSB/PCIE 2.0 limitations now, i think an SSD is my next stop, before total system replacement.

If there was a sentence i could use to sign off on it with it'd be: "That'll do, pig."

About PCIE 2.0, how do you see these limitations? I thought it didn't matter that much, but honestly I'm not sure.

A fresh install on a new SSD would be a nice upgrade.

Yeah, I've seen tests with similar results in the past. I guess your GPU is more of a bottleneck than the PCIE interface itself.

SSD is the biggest upgrade anyone with a decent system besides it can do.Well you WILL feel the difference going for something with intergrated NB, but it isnt really stellar difference like with ssd vs hdd.Im pretty sure you can hang in there until skylake :-)

I've been running a GTX 970 on a P45 w/ a Q9550 clocked @ 3.6GHz. While it's beginning to show its age with some games(CPU utilization @ ~70-90%; and a few microstutters here and there), this rig has done quite admirably. Definitely will be upgrading when DDR4 components drop down to enthusiast-level prices :P

Edit: And yes, a SSD makes night-day difference, even on a SATA 2 system

power savings would need to be out of this world to make upgrading from ivy to broadwell worth it

This is where I'm at. I'd hate to put together a Broadwell rig then watch Intel release Skylake within 6 months.

I'll stick with my workhorse Core 2 @ 3.6 for now.
