FX 8320E on a Crosshair IV Formula

I didn't want to keep stepping on Flank3r's thread, but I have to admit. I'm pretty impressed with this chip...

So far I've been testing it on a 3 year old CH4F, and the results are impressive! I don't get parts for free, so maybe I just got lucky and hit the chip lottery, but this one has done really well considering I'm running it on a Crosshair IV.

I'll definitely be moving it to the main rig this weekend to see what I can get...

Here's a CB15 run using the old board, with weaker cooling and all the tweaks needed to get it to work on an outdated board.

The 8370E may turn out to be the better chip, but considering the price this 8320E is no slouch!

BTW: Thanks Infra and Johan, Your tips on running higher HTRef to avoid CPU Throttling worked out well on the C4F...

Nice one Dave! Although the score seems a little bit low.
Even on my bloated 3 years old windows 7, it scores much higher.
Maybe try different multiplier, I remember having issues with 20 or 21 multi.

I want to try one of these "new" CPUs, but the only one available here is the 8320E, while I'd like to test 8370.

Yeah, I thought it looked a little low too... I think it may still be throttling a little.
I'll tweak some more tonight, to see If I can get it straightened out.

This weekend I'm definitely going to try this chip in my main rig. I've been pretty surprised by how well this chip handles considering it's only an 8320E!

    Sorry for the double Post...

I worked with this 8320E a little more tonight on the C4F.
It was definitely throttling to some extent. I improved the score quite a bit by using your suggestion and tweaking the HTRef while keeping the Multi below the turbo clock Ivan ...

Thanks for the tips Bro. I still think this cheapo chip has some good potential! We'll see how how it does on the main rig this weekend...
I get the feeling it'll do a whole lot better on the C5F, and I won't have to fight all the work around crap...

AMD hasn't had much to offer lately, but this little core tweak has been pretty impressive!

Oh man, I was trying to figure out if the new FX CPUs would run on my old (pre Formula Z) Crosshair V but if they work on a Crosshair IV I can safely assume that they don't need new AGESA code to run properly
Now the only question is: 8310, 8320E, 8370 or 8370E? They all seem like great overclockers. I run on air (NH-D14 with beefed up fans), 8350 at 4.8 if I can stand the noise.

8320 comes as a black edition i believe. But the problem is that they cant hold high multipliers. I get a post on 5GHz and i have'nt even tried, but i'm sure when playing with FSB in combination with a stable high MP i should be able to hit 5GHz and above.

That crosshair IV is a really good board. Used it for 2 years and brought massive stability, even with a Thuban X6 going for a wild run on 4.4GHz!

The board died and i replaced it with a Crosshair Z, which is even better and defenilty in the high end area. There is no other board able to compete with featureset that this board provides. Only get one when the price is right.

I am thinking to buy a really old, slow and outdated but new AM3+ CPU, run up a DICE and play with some cold-ice. See if i can run a WR on the slowest CPU on earth.

There's also gain to be archieved when tweaking memory (highest possible speed + low latency), and ofcourse the HTT. Takes hours of time but i'm sure it's all worth it.

Humm... if FX8320Es start to appear dirt cheap the next year, I might drop one on a M4A89GTD PRO to replace an OC'd 955C2. I presume it should have the same quirks than CFIVs had with FX CPUs on the last beta bios, it's good to know that support it's not limited to 1st gen Bulldozers.

@AlleyViper: Asus M4A89GTD PRO / Asus M4A89GTD PRO-USB3.0 / M4A89TD PRO / Asus M4A89TD PRO-USB3.0 have all support for FX8320/FX8350 even if not documented by Asus site with standard BIOS-es, as you can see below, I assume the E processors support does not represent a problem:

My guess is that board without "official" support for the 8320e/8370e/8370 would simply mis-identify the CPU and maybe mess up some turbo multipliers, if that. They would probably work otherwise.

22JHP, those results on your 8320e are pretty good! You almost caught an OCed 4770k there. And you're only using a UD5 too? Cool.

Thank you! IIRC even the original Bulldozers on these boards had some problems with turbo/vcore overvolt unless everything was set manually and no Turbo, I presume it'll be the same on later series (and I really hope these E series don't pose a problem, as they're desirable due to better binning). But that's pretty minor to me given the performance boost vs a really bad early 955C2.

In the past I've ran a completely unsupported tbred XP2400+ on a very old KT133A MB via some jumper miracle, these quirks are part of the fun.
