    My Adventures with an 8370E

I know it may be silly, but I'm an admitted AMD fan... My 9370 was a decent clocker, but since the pros where saying the newest chips had a minor revision and where putting up some nice numbers I thought WTH, $190 isn't much for a new toy...

I always tune for H.264 stability since that's the most stressful thing I do. That being said, here's where my 9370 was stable for that use:

Here's the system power draw for that rig under load using IBT (fuzzy pic, but readable):

I just installed the 8370E, and have barely tested it, but on the bright side the VID's/temps look nice!
CPU Vid is 1.175v and IMC is 1.165v... I've already hit 4.2Ghz IBT stable without touching the voltage, and core temp maxed out ~40c.
So far it's looking really good!

For anyone interested, stay tuned while my adventure continues...

Your right Flank3r... I'm liking this chip already!

OK... It's late and I'm done for the night!
I've only been working on core clocks, but so far this chip is Awesome!
Once I find out what the cores like I'll start working on the IMC.

After some more tuning I may have found my 5Ghz Unicorn Tbone8ty...

Here's what I have after 4 hours of tuning with this chip (IBT Stable):

Power consumption is still a little high, but it's 100w less than the 9370 and honestly that's not a serious concern because I use CnQ and both chips do fine while idling in balanced mode...

    8370E (system) loaded:

Special Thanks for your help Stilt!

i have a nice 8320 and i cant go higher than 4800 with 1.40V (stable)
is that with the CHV-F or the Z?
    congrats great cpu !

I know I'm pretty slow and meticulous when it comes to OC'ing...
Anyway, I'm still working with this chip and like it better than my 9370!

darkage: My board is a CHV-F (not a Z version).

tbone8ty: There's a piece of software that tells you the VIDS (but I forgot what it is). I got those numbers by setting bios to "Auto" and seeing what it came up with...

FWIW, I'm still an old school guy who tries for 30minutes of P95 stability. I know Prime isn't a good test for FX chips, and stresses things way beyond anything you'd see in real world use! But I still use it for 30 minutes...

Anyway, I was testing Prime tonight and was stable for 20 minutes (blend). Then like a dumbazz I decided to bump the HTRef clock up by 2 before taking a screen cap... It crashed and I lost proof of Prime stability...

I'm sure I'll get at least 5Ghz stable with this chip! IMC may be a problem over 2.6 though.

Here's where I'm at using IBT:

nice job Dave... those volts are ridiculous for the clocks. so which is the chip to get guys? 8370 or 8370e?

I think even though I installed the swiftech h220x I've reached the limits of my chip... i cant for the life of me get past with any stability...R15 will run for a quick test. i thought the h220x would get me to 4.9-5.1ghz with some confidence ah well back to testing....there has to be some secret combo of settings haha or it could be my memory on its way out. or the IMC of the chip is weak. my fx-8350 is an old stepping anyways.

i think i need to grab a memory heatsink fan to put over my VRM's... something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835236002

There's a piece of software that tells you the VIDS (but I forgot what it is)
use coretemp for VID.my 8320's vid is 1.3250v and i wonder yours.

    Very nice chip Dave!

This chip is quite an improvement compared to 9370 you had, I wonder what AMD or GloFo changed, if anything, to get there.

    Have fun and report back!

I don't want to sound to negative. But IntelBurnTest is barely usable to test whether a chip is stable or not.
I just tried it on my FX 8320 and the test passed with a vid of only 1.43125v (1.428v on cpu-z).
I do agree, this test is enough as nearly no game or app will stress the cpu as much as prime95 or even worse OCCT does.

I personally, only consider an overclock stable if it can sustain at least 8 hours OCCT (large data set).

But Daveburt's CPU does have potential. It could perhaps do 5.1 ghz fully stable.

I tested second chip, FX-8370, seems similar in OC as 8370E. But 8370E is better at modules for valdiation. Hard benchmarks are similar. The difference is the 8370 scaling very well up to 5050 MHz (1.415V), after is as some slug - too much voltage and little MHZ extra for Cinebenchs.
Max Cinebench 5240 MHz 1.55V with allinone AMD liquid, max validation over 5670 MHz 1.555V at CU0 and the same for CU2

IronBalls: I only use IBT to get a rough idea of stability. Once I find that I go for 30 minutes of Prime95(blend) and adjust as needed. This has always proven to be stable for any apps I use including x264 encoding...
Looks like you have a golden 8320 BTW!

22JHP: I just checked my CPU VID using CoreTemp. It's even lower than what the board set as "auto" 1.125v.

tbone8ty: I always use "RC Tweakit" to make adjustments on the fly. Never had much luck with TurboEvo either... You will need a spare PC/Laptop and a USB cable to run it (on a remote machine), but the results are much more reliable and it has the ability to reboot/shutdown/start and reset CMOS on the main rig from the remote pc. Personally that's all I'll use when clocking the Crosshair boards!

Lightman: Hi mate, Long time no chat... The Stilt said there was a minor revision to the cores leading up to the release these new chips (C0j to C0k), that's the main reason I went ahead and tried one.
The guy knows his stuff! I don't regret it one bit. See post #59 in this thread:

Oh well, I'm gonna work on Prime Blend stability a little more tonight. I think I'm getting close...

    Sorry for the double post...

It took more voltage than I wanted to use (1.49375), and temps were definitely getting a little hairy but I finally got my 5Ghz stability for 30 minutes of P95 blend. Pretty confident this will be fully stable for anything I need to do!

Granted, it wound up costing me ~$1 per Mhz, but after months of trying there's no way my 9370 would have hit this mark...

I actually pushed the HTRef up to 203, and it ran another 5 minutes before a core dropped out. Not a big deal though...
Just happy to have a stable 5Ghz chip!

Now to start working on the IMC/Mem clocks...

    Once I get things settled I'll try a CB15 run Flank3r!

nice chip Dave" For crazy PRIME is 5 GHz very nice! IM curious what your CPUNB. My 8370E is good at CPUNB, 2600+ stable and for benchmarks easy over 2700. I not tested more, but maybe it can handle at 2800+ in hard benchmarks. Now I have in benchsystem clasic Fx-8370....

    Wow... That's really nice!

It's hard for me to tell though, was that run P95 Blend, or Just FFT's?
The temps also look really low, was it done on ambient water?

    Sweet chip reguardless...
I obviously have some more work to do!

Hasestab is wellknown to delid his CPU. He had a FX 59XX which he delidded and could do less than mine ( needed 1.488v for 5 ghz prime stable ).
In his thread he does say he cools even the backside of the CPU socket. And look at the temps of his GPU 25C. And he doesn't state if he uses prime95 blend or small FFTs (which stresses the CPU less).

Compare it with mine prime95 2 hours blend run with a room temp of 26C (the external sensor gives the room temp and take a good look at the CPU temp while priming.

The socket temp is the main problem. If I cooled the back of the mainboard I would probably get better results. So I don't think his chip can do 5 ghz @ 1.464v with normal ambient temps.
Next week, temps will go down where I live, so I will try to get 2 hours prime95 blend with the least possible voltage.
