    So, a 10 12% advantage over a 780TI in relative performance 100 vs 88

Well, looks like we will still wait for the next true gpu revolution because 980 isn't it.

Anyway, the 970 is the winner for people buying new systems, amazing bang for buck

    Evolution, not revolution...

    Remember - GK104 ->GK110 => GM204-> ?

Well it's a nice bump, but I wasn't planning on upgrading until Dec 2014 or Jan 2015...maybe I can wait for the 980 Ti or Titan 2 or whatever the GM200 will become.

My crystal ball is seeing Fiji being released regaining the performance crown for AMD/ATi and then 980Ti or Titan 2 coming shortly and crushing it - anyone else see the same thing?

The 970 sure looks like a nice little card for those who haven't upgraded in a few years. Overshadows the 980 a bit though.

Impressive launch from Nvidia. Didn't expect it to beat 780Ti but it sure did and with great efficiency. If I don't get my 780 working again I might convince myself to buy a 970 and OC the hell out of it.

To be honest, the 980 after a price drop or maybe two depending on what happens with AMD. Is almost tempting, the performance over the 770 when overclocked is nice.

LAB501, nice review, min and avg fps, thanks for doing that!

I too think the earlier rumours that Nvidia has a GM200 or GM210 waiting are now true. They've left too much performance on the table, the process is mature enough for for nvidia to sell fully enabled 550mm2 chips for nearly a year, there is certainly room for a 28nm Maxwell Titan.

Went ahead and put down an order last night on the ACX 1.0 equipped EVGA superclocked. Hopefully won't regret it.

The ACX 1.0 cooler is decent, yeah?

I'm impressed how NVIDIA managed to decrease the specs and it slightly outperformed the GTX 780 TI and used less power is quite impressive.

However I think the 980 is a bit overpriced, here in Australia its like over $700 and thats asking too much. However, the 970 is priced nicely and I will buy a pair of those and SLI them. Or unless if AMD comes up with something better soon. Having HDMI 2.0 is a bonus for me because I'm currently running a 4K TV and enough of 30Hz or that stupid colour loss at 60Hz due to HDMI 1.4 limitations.

Are there any reviews around that compare (factory) oced 780 Tis vs the 980?

Considering that 1100-1200 core for the 780 is no problem on air.

You are onto something Hornet! These comparisons aren't all that good, but hopefully supplies some kind of ballpark value.

I actually found the Tomshardware review to be quite interesting in regards to power consumption for the GTX 980..

    Nvidia?s GPU Boost Accelerates Maxwell
Everything makes sense in theory, but we still want to know how Maxwell achieves better efficiency at this magnitude. Kepler already adjusted the GPU?s voltage quickly and exactly depending on its load and temperature, and AMD?s PowerTune did the same thing as well. It turns out that Maxwell refines the formula further. With its shaders fully utilized, the new architecture's advantage over Kepler practically vanishes. So, Maxwell depends on its superior ability to adjust to changing loads, and, consequently, it?s able to tailor the power consumption even better to the needs of the application in question. The more variance there is, the better Maxwell fares.
    Max Stress Test Power Consumption
If the load is held constant, then the lower power consumption measurements vanish immediately. There?s nothing for GPU Boost to adjust, since the highest possible voltage is needed continuously. Nvidia's stated TDP becomes a distant dream. In fact, if you compare the GeForce GTX 980?s power consumption to an overclocked GeForce GTX Titan Black, there really aren?t any differences between them. This is further evidence supporting our assertion that the new graphics card?s increased efficiency is largely attributable to better load adjustment and matching.

    thx for the effort.

hmm seems its pretty much what i thought it would be, the Ti has a slight edge in high res/high resolution scenarios. So for people who already own 780Tis there is absoutly no reason at all to go for a 980.

Not to mention I can get 780Tis for a 80-100€ cheaper then 980s here.

If the 980s drop to ~450€ they would be a good value for all people who still are on the 6 series or 7xxxx series, everyone else, nope not so much.

    @toms review
actually I am quite surprised there, that the titan has less power consumption under full load the 980.

Wow! I haven't even consider buying an Nvidia card in 3-years as I could easily get better performance for over a $100 less with AMD. But this 980 card....I can't believe Nvidia finally priced a card competitively or rather for what it is actually worth.......the old 'whoop ass' marketing hype from Nvidia's hay-days must be wearing off.

Still no reason to move away from my tried and true GTX 690.

$670 for GTX 970 SLI seems to be the best deal form nvidia in a very long time. Only $120 over a gtx 980.

Performance-wise, I have no interst in the 980 due to pricing, despite the "fair" price vs a 780Ti.
    You must [not] advance.

Went for that myself, total price for two GTX 970 MSI Gaming cards for SLI came to $655 after shipping. Can't wait for them to come in . They OC like crazy and perform insanely... as a 4k user even though I could afford a pair of GTX 980's, I don't feel the 20% or so oc-to-oc and stock-to-stock change would be worth paying $1100 for instead (68% more expensive).

that's not fair. depending on what you do, 980 is 10fps faster than 780/780ti, and then gets another 10fps faster from overclocking. and dual 780 is much faster than 690.

so dual 980 overclocked is way faster than 690, and so there is definitely a reason to move away: SPEED

That point is moot, the 10% is stock vs stock. When you bring in ocing the performance advantage of the 980 vanishes compared to the 780ti.

Yes it is, but also comes at 1200$+ and performs the same as 2 780Ti, which you probably now could get for 800$, maybe even cheaper when you get some used deals.

His point was that there is no reason to get a 980, because the 690 still has better performance in most cases, so from his monetary value perspective there is no reason to change it.

    As for the 970 SLI
    http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/N...970_SLI/1.html

man thats a might good value right there, 30% more performance then a 980 vs 10% more expensive.

Wonder if a 3rd party will make a dual 970 card for under 600$.
