its not just about FPS on the 980 for me.

• DSR is going to be amazing to use on older games
• HDMI 2.0- Gotta love that
• H.265 Transcoding
• Way better Shadowplay and Nvidia Streaming performance for those of us who have shield tablet or mobile.
• Can run 4 monitors off 1 card
• DX12
• New AA that doesnt ruin performance
• VXGI
• VR features for Oculus Rift release next year
• Double performance per watt

4GB is nice as well. this is only the beginning of the architecture. nvidia will no doubt milk it for the next 2-3 year and get all kinds of performance gains, but the hardware feature set will be identical. (see list)

That point is moot, the 10% is stock vs stock. When you bring in ocing the performance advantage of the 980 vanishes compared to the 780ti.



Yes it is, but also comes at 1200$+ and performs the same as 2 780Ti, which you probably now could get for 800$, maybe even cheaper when you get some used deals.

His point was that there is no reason to get a 980, because the 690 still has better performance in most cases, so from his monetary value perspective there is no reason to change it.

Thats stupid just because its faster does not mean you HAVE to upgrade. Its also important that its faster by a appreciable margin. Which it clearly wont be for XTREME people. These arent the cards for that lot anyways. That is gonna start at 700$.

I'm a little perplexed at the UE4 elemental result, seems to be a very small gain but it may be something I am doing wrong as I am using fraps to benchmark that and having to manually start and finish it so it may not be the most scientific process.

I will run these on my new system when all the parts arrive, it'll be x99 rampage V extreme, 16gb 2800mhz corsair ddr4, sandisk extreme pro 960GB SSD, and the new i7 5960X which I will cool with the swiftech h220x and hopefully get a decent OC on.

I thought it might be interesting to see what kind of difference there would be with a current top-end GPU on a fairly powerful (but now starting to show its age at 4-5 years old) gaming rig vs the same GPU on current high end hardware, maybe there are others like me who were sitting on such a system and wondering if it was time to upgrade.

The gains are just MASSIVE upgrading from 680 ..... if I can score a 4k screen (unless i decide to build a rc plane or rebuild my bike) im dreaming of 2 x 670. When you get your new cpu I would LOVE to see a comparison. I reckon the 920 is good for a bit yet .... nothing monumental has happened in the cpu world since then..... but the numbers will give a clear picture.

This gen is making 2500 rez conquerable with a single card.... pretty ing awesome imo the Ti should be pretty impressive .... ATI's turn to chase now

The 930 is limiting your system. Depends on the benchmarks, but latest gen at same speed is probably 40-50% faster.

I upgraded from a i7 920@3.6ghz to a i7 4790k@4.6ghz. In cinebench I got a 65% improvement.

I can run this 930 at 4.4ghz potentially but i stopped doing that as it was making no difference in games and it let me keep the voltage way lower. Either way this is what i want to figure out, how much benefit is provided by 5 years of i7 progress. I'm more interested in game benefits over synthetic too.

In the Cinebench cpu test the 4790k is 45% faster than the 920 at the same clock speed. But for games it depends where the bottleneck might be. All I can say for games is that it feels faster with my new 4790k, but I have't done any tests to prove it.

that's not fair. depending on what you do, 980 is 10fps faster than 780/780ti, and then gets another 10fps faster from overclocking. and dual 780 is much faster than 690.

so dual 980 overclocked is way faster than 690, and so there is definitely a reason to move away: SPEED

Life isn't fair, lol. I bought my 690 knowing that it would do it's job & hold up decently. I paid $700. $400 more is worth the jump vs what I paid? $400 more is worth it vs 970 SLI? I'd say no, either way.

The 980 is not an ideal card IMHO.

Are those features on available on the 970? I honestly don't know. I've only seen frame rates for games.

No reason. My card runs all games I have at the resolutions & settings I want. Now, if I wanted Metro Last Light running at 1440p maxed out, then yes, 970s or 980s would be on the priority list. I told myself I'd hold onto this card & not upgrade till I basically upgrade my aging 2600k. So far, it does everything I need.

Frankly, where's the gtx 990? I'd rather have a single WCing block & only eat up 2 slots. Unfortunately, we got the GTX 295x2, 590 & 690. No 790, instead we got 780Ti. We might get a 990 due to low power consumption & low heat, but no one knows yet.

The SLI 980 is what you'd consider an appropriate, comparable, & a generation to generation upgrade to the 690, but I don't. It's not a 990 & a single card has advantages. Ask anyone running an ITX set up or m-ATX and they have a raid or other card.

The price of the 980 is too high for the performance increase. It's not the best card unless you have a lot of money burning a hole in your wallet. GTX 980 @ 550 USD vs GTX 970 SLI @ 660 USD, that's the argument that most here, including myself, are making. I'd choose SLI'ing the 2nd best card over a single top tier, any day.

Sorry for the partial quote but it peaked my interest. 2600k is not really aging as long as Intel keeps on refusing to release better desktop parts. Tell me one Intel cpu that offers truly better performance when both it and 2600k are being over clocked (on air that is, nothing fancy). In electronics, age is not so much a function of time, but rather obsolescence. In the cpu market where things move sloooowly nothing really ages, in gpu market what you bought 2 years ago is probably already obsolete.

Btw the differences between a market where competition thrives and one that is not are quite drastic. Intel says it is difficult to extract much more performance when transistors get so small, but both gpus and arm socs routinely do so. And then they wonder why the pc market is tanking (if you release the same performance level for 5 years in a row do you expect the consumer to buy a new pc/cpu/laptop)? The fact that Intel got lazy actually hurt her, now ultramobiles (that follow "Moores law" in performance) is murdering them. Also no wonder that forums like xtreme are getting less and less life (nothing to see here, move along, Intel released their almost best processor 4 years ago, move along)... Damn (sorry)

I grabbed myself a pair of Palit Jetstream 970s at ?283 each. Thats the same as I paid for my 680s, and I can still get a decent bit back for those on Ebay, so hopefully Im looking at just ?100-110 per card for the upgrade.

The 980s are way too overpriced, I saw that the palit cards and most other 970s OC to 1400 Mhz anyway, and perform the same as a stock 980, so I cant really justify how much more the 980s cost, they should really be in the ?350-400 price range in comparison.

Also the Palit ones have 3x mini DP outputs so I should be able to support triple Asus swift monitors, should be able to buy another two of them next year if surround Gsync gets working with these 3 DP output GPUs, which was the main reason I decided to get these (also got a mini DP > DP 1.2 cable ordered with them).

Ooops, these Gainward phantoms were a bit cheaper (?280 on today only), look nicer and also have 3 x mini DP outputs:

There are about the same. I don't care for power consumption. I would really like to know your opinion, 'cause even the graph I can understand, I don't know what is your conclusion.

IMHO, GTX780Ti is a better price/performance card.

Those 780Ti are a bargain.

On the high mid-range, it gets more difficult to choose a card.

R9 290 is going for U$S 290
GTX970 is U$S 330

I'd love to see both overclocked and benched. I'd bet they perform the same, or within -5 to +5% difference. And you save U$S40, or nearly 14%.

As I said, to the performance/price oriented, IMHO, R9 290 at U$S290 and GTX780Ti at U$S430 are the cards to get. It goes without saying that I love the GTX900 series, they dropped the prices on everything.

I'm looking to replace my HD7950, and I think I'll go nVidia this time If I can get a good deal on the GTX970 (with a PCB that doesn't look like a rebranded GTX960 mid range ugly looking card), but those R9 290 are really really tempting and most likely will perform the same.

So an update on what will happen, I called Scan and they said the driver will be returning to wherever he sent the parcel (it was signed for by some random person) and trying to retrieve it. They have tracking and signature evidence of wherever the parcel ended up.

If he can retrieve it he will bring it back to me, if not then I get replacements. I will be demanding G1s as replacements without any extra charge if that ends up happening....
