Used 7970 or wait for 20nm?

    Hey guys,

So I've been living off my trustee 4850 for years now (best purchase I've ever made, $150 week of launch) but it's been causing crashes lately. My guess is that it has to do with the VRM heating issues, as they got better once put some ramsinks, but the fact of the matter remains that I do need more performance for modern games.

I currently do not like any of the available products given the price points. It just doesn't make sense to me to purchase something that runs extremely hot, consumes a ton of power, and frankly is not going to be able to compete with the next gen architecture. Thus my question to you guys is do you think I should get a used 7970 from ebay (they go for around $150) as a holdover, and then get a new 20nm card once they launch next year, or just wait for the next launch? I highly doubt I would be able to sell the 7970 for the same $150 then, but on the flipside it does give me more time to wait for the next gen prices to settle.

    Thoughts?

I don't see the point in waiting since we don't even have firm release dates.

Yeah that makes sense. I've looked purely into the offers that come from people who claim to have used it as a gaming card, but there's truly no way of verifying that.

I've always looked at the F.S. section here, but the prices have actually been somewhat unreasonable lately. Thus now I'm checking ebay fairly often.

For anyone deciding on the same thing, I ended up grabbing an r9 280x off ebay for $165. Seller claims it was never used for bitcoin so I think I got a good deal.

I learned to upgrade video cards often, you can get back a decent amount of money. Just recently I got $70 for my GTX460

    Wink

I just put my MSI 7970 up on ebay. I only game on the weekends and I have never mined.
Anyway, you'll know it's mine when you see it because it has: MSI Lightning clone bios (1150 MHZ core, 1500 MHZ memory using same reference voltage), A giant Arctic Accelero Extreme 7970 Heat-sink, giant custom fabricated copper VRM heat-sins, individual aluminum GDDR5 heat-sinks applied with 3m thermal tape, and finally a custom fabricated Aluminum retention back-plate used to secure both the Arctic Accelero and the big VRM heat-sinks. The buy it now price is $149 and bidding started at $99. I would like for someone from here to buy it as I put a lot of time into making those custom parts and I would like to see the card stay in the community. I think i'm not allowed to link to it so you'll have to find it. Auction ends on Thursday evening (10/30/14).
And I will add that, it runs better then a new card because for one it's clocked higher and two it can easily pull the MSI Lightning BE's reference setting of 280 Watts consistently without overheating, which means no throttling or any random weird behavior...it's solid and second only to a water cooled 7970

Yes, I very much like it especially the aluminum frame. It is very heavy and solid for its size. Plus, the feel of mechanical keys makes want to type...its cool. There is also a full RGB version of this keyboard now if you are rich!
