General Question about 2 Video Card Installation

(I didn't know where to post this off top so...if it must be moved: Forum Ops work your magic.)

I just got my new R9 280 X and I'm about to install it. I want to keep my R 6850 HD as well in there, do I cross fire thelm or just install them in different slots? Also, will it even be worth keeping the R 6850 in there?

you can keep it in there, no real reason to.

if you crossfire them the 280x will downclock itself to match the 6859's performance, so it will be much slower than just running the 280x alone.

like I said, no real reason to keep the old card in there, donate it to charity or somthing.

Yah, I did more research and found that out. I installed it all up after posting this this morning and I think the 6850 is bottlnecking it so it is coming out soon. The 280X is a great card so far tho

There is a reason to keep the card in if multiple display devices collectively exceed the requirements from a single card (For example, number of physical interfaces between cards and display devices).

I only have one 23" LCD Display for now, maybe 6 months down the line I will pick up 2 more but I doubt it. More than likely, I will just get a bigger LED 1080p TV. I have always just been happy with one Display. I mean, really this technology you guys are growing up with today is amazing but, I come from the SNES and Super Mario Bros. 8-bit gaming era.

When it comes to the R6850. What I was really hoping is that the old 6850 I had would just act as another graphics chip to give it a slight boost or something in performance but, I am happy with the R9 280X stand alone as it is, so far. I mean, I can't run everything on like 24XX AA but it is a sweet unit.

People with a 6850 rarely have more than 4 monitors, so I didn't even bother listing that..
Plus the rarity of that would have ment that he would have most likely stated that in the first post.

Glad to see your working good, 280x is a nice card my brother just picked one up and it performs just a tiny bit better than my 7970.

The second card is great for extra displays. I Fly DCS so I have 3 40" TVs setup in eyefinity for the main view and a 22" touchscreen for the instruments on a 290. I need to add 4 more screens so I'm goint to keep my 6970 for them.
