Francois Piednoel (DrWho?) posting some interesting OCing information

Today Francois Piednoel is posting some interesting information and tips regarding overclocking over on his Twitter account:

    FPiednoel

A lot of air cooling stuff so far but seems that he is going pretty in depth and will discuss some sub-zero topics.

That's what I said. The remarks he makes with Dry Ice and "air cooling" are reference to some shouting that was going on over the Computex "air" numbers that hit the media.

Hadn't paid much attention to media Computex coverage outside of Facebook posts so I'm in the dark about what you're talking about. Any links or enlighten me? Anything he's saying have any validity?

Things got a little heated on Facebook between XtremeCustoms, Buckeye, Movieman and I about allowing LN2 to lower air temperatures at computex and the lack of reporting on it...

As far as what Francois is saying? I think even a 12 year old could guess that higher water vapor content in the air would lead to better thermal characteristics, for example. Air isn't a very good medium to transfer heat.

He goes on talking about power consumption vs temperature and etc. all of which he says is true too.

Just FYI, these were the XTU results of the Amateur overclocking competition. They just used a Cooler Master AIO with no tweaking the ambient.

yea at computex a cold box with LN2 was common, we made the mistake of using a closed loop watercooler instead of an air cooler, but yea... i felt the same thing when i read his posts. I heard Intel was a bit surprised about the air cooling results at their comp, until they realized it wasn't really air cooling in the common sense of the term.

We used air cooling only no ln2 on our system. Was proud of that. 5496mhz Cpuz on air using slow mode and power tweaks

of course, ist marketing. he said nothing about 4c/8t stability at 5 GHz, but only you can get 5 Ghz (so if superpi or valdiation for 5s doesnt matter).
Massman: of course, 4800 MHz with allinone in XTU is nice, but most of Devils hit around around 4700 MHz stable. Is the same, I can do validation without change the ambinets with my FX over 5700 MHz and OK voltage or 5300+ Cineebchs run. But stable? Not, max stable around 5 GHz. Maybe some very good delided 4790K could get 5 GHz XTU benchmark at air/allinone with safe voltage, but not average Im sure

So all we are seeing is binned ES chips and what they can do ???

Been there before, then retail hits and everyone says.. hey what happened to 5ghz ??? we have to bin retail to get that.

but the new thermal interface material tastes like terrible cheese! that has to be worth something right? (did i just violate NDA?)

    btw...

Allen, congrats on the strong wins.

When you are as big as Allen, shaking your fist at the screen not only is a power tweak, it actually works.
