x4 955 BE C2
My happy part of life...That was many,many times with Phenom II...I wanted not x4 940 BE, I wanted x4 955 BE. I was waiting few months for it and bought the one. C2 revision, passion with others guys here and the same batch as first *Chews 955. Dreams are somentimes real! And this era was my start to the extreme overclocking and big enthusiasm for CPUs. Thanks to *Chew again, thanks to Simon Solotko, thanks to Phenom II era. Before I was beginner with Athlons X2 and I was finding next experience with 65nm Phenoms. But Phenoms II was the real start to the community.











A8-3850 and 3870K Llano, first APU
I was shocked from iGPU performance. CPU clocks was not great as Phenoms II, but still many things to tweaking. I was happy for my 6 GHz llano with LN2...Girls liked LN2 nitrogen at event













A10-5800K Trinity
Second AMD APU, first 15h APU, better IPC than Bulldozer, again great iGPU. I had no much time for tweaking this APU...Maybe in future, maybe I need 1 month holiday out of work for all this fun benchmarking





FX-8120/8150
We waiting few years for Bulldozer, hope for awesome performance we got decent performance. But afterall, not bad in multithreading. But...we hope for more at beginning. But those CPUs got me first 7 GHz+. I was so happy. Over 7400 MHz, first in my life! And over 5000 MHz at air for valdiation and light benchamrks. Wow.









FX-4300
First Time I tried "lowend" FX model. But good OCable and OK for low costet AMD gaming rigs...Last AMD powerfull architecture Vishera FX. Maybe (I hope not!) the last one powerfull AMD ever...This was Vishera time.

Best Times again was probably Barton was it 2600+ nice OC too. Spanking the Intel boys.

Worst times.. It was not that bad but the Phenom, not much OC there. Looking back that was quite a chip. 100lbs in a 10lbs box. Still running today at my folks kitchen computer.

After the wonderful world of Commodore Vic20/C64/Amiga (as Archie Bunker would say "Those were the Days")...
My first 486 computer was an AMD K6-2 400. I dabbled in OC'ing, but didn't get serious until socket 939.

Back then (2005?) the quest was to hit 3Ghz stable... I got close with an Athlon X2 4800 Toledo core. It's been a while, but I think it was an Opteron derivative with some deleted cache.
That gave the 4800X2 some serious OC headroom, although I never broke the 3Ghz barrier with it...
That chip still kicked Intel's butt in everything except SuperPi (imagine that). I looked for some pics from that era, but couldn't find anything pertaining to the 4800X2.

I did find some pics from my first 3Ghz chip though! It was an Opty 185, very expensive (~$1000) and it broke the 3Ghz barrier...
Also, my first adventure into water cooling. It was homemade stuff back then, created from a Chevette heater core, some homegrown engineering and a pond pump.

I was quite proud of that back in the day! And the only benchie the Intel folks over @ Tech Report could beat my 185 @ was SuperPi...

I have been cleaning up around this room lately and setting aside the old and totally obsolete parts for the next free electronics recycling day. I came across this which I photographed before finally putting it to rest in the trash:



My first ever completely home built system. I had reused the monitor/keyboard/mouse/video card from a Dell desktop until I had the money to upgrade further. I think the first upgrade was a second stick of RAM. Even without the ability to use dual-channel on S754, it was hell running Windows and trying to game on only 512MB of RAM the first couple of months. Shortly after that I got the AC Freezer Pro 64 HSF, a MX518 mouse, a 3.5" bay fan controller, 80mm fan cover filters, and 80mm Panaflo fans (fast and noisy ones too!). As soon as I was ready I started to both overclock my chip and mod my case for better airflow. Even later on I went on to cut out the fan grills with a holesaw (those old cases had AWFUL airflow designs compared to today), modifying the plastic case panels, and lapping my HSF's copper base for better contact.



I still have this case upstairs. I don't even want to remind myself how loud those 80mm Panaflo's were.


I think this is the highest I took that chip stable. I am absolutely sure knowing what I do now I could have squeezed more out of it. Not to mention the advantages using a modern heat
pipe cooler or liquid cooling would have given me compared to that 92mm HSF from Artic Cooling. That first Biostar motherboard didn't even have BIOS options to go above 2.5GHz. I could go temporarily higher in Windows with ClockGen(?) software and later I upgraded to a better motherboard with far better BIOS features.



Clocking the old DDR1. I still have this Ballistix in case anyone is interested.

Now that was an upgrade! Kids these days... Man oh man the memories of how you had to disable automatic updates on antivirus software because if it kicked in while you were gaming on a single-core processor everything would turn into a brutal slow motion slide-show.

This is about 1/2 or 2/3 of my S462/A collection. Some day i'll get around to digging for that magic T-Bred B. So far the best is a 2500k that did 2700mhz @ 2.05v on air with ricky tweak (hot!!!).

wow, very nice guys. I had Venice s754 too and I cant overlcok it much. Only around 2300 MHz, others were very unstable and getting bluescreens
After with x2 4600+ EE was awesome upgrade, so quick this dual cores...So I understand to DedEmbryonicCe1. Nice x2 5000+ BE! Over 3000 MHz, wow.

Stevil: nice collection of XPs . I got few Athlons XP much later.

Best memories of AMD: Benching 980BE with ln2 on magical Crosshair III Formula... I did have a lot of fun.



After Bulldozer released I moved on to Intel. Only casually benched FM2 but it's no fun.

Very nice, Phenoms II and LN2 (or without LN2) were great for tweaking. But now with Visheras is not bad too. Stronger NB, very strong HT (3500+), CPU clocks - all with air doable over 5 GHz for benchamrks

Had a blast with Barton but my fondest memories were with 939 Opterons & DFI fighting to get in the 3GHz club over on the DFI forum. There was a straight shooting animal (Travis) called himself Angry games that stood for no sh@t on his forum so the place was cool & full of excellent information.

If I remember correctly your chip had to run a loop of prime then 3DMARK to enter.

Wow those dies are tiny compared to what we have today for high end chips. Is that the old white "silicone" TIM that a lot of OEMs used? I know my P4 Williamette had that stuff and after a while it dried up into a crust.
