Red face Under the Ice for Hallowen

Hallowen and I go back about 10 years ago from Team Puss forums. He asked me to do this single stage for him not because he doesn't know how, but he's just not set up to do it himself at the present time.

This will be a simple walk-through of the procedure and parts I use to build my single stages. This unit will be built to handle 300watts of heat at approximately -35C using refrigerant r507. There will be lots of pictures. I hope no one minds.

I use a 3/4 hp condenser to dissipate the heat.

Along with that I use a matching 3/4 ton Danfoss 18CC compressor.

Compressor is mounted to base and discharge and liquid lines are run first.

I like to paint all copper joints to keep them from oxidizing and for general overall looks.

While the paint is drying I work on the wiring.

    Simple ON/OFF switch

Evaporator starts out smooth and clean on the inside but I like to rough it up a little to add more turbulence to refrigerant to aid in evaporating.

Evaporator is then cleaned and brazed.

Next up is assembly of line set.

    Finished brazing and clean.

I like to pressure test line set to 250psi and dunk it in water to be sure I have no leaks.

Cap tube is added and line set is wrapped with water proof mastic tape to hold the cap tube tightly to the suction line.

Okay line set is all together and ready to be installed on compressor.

More pictures coming after leak testing is finished. Thanks for looking.

    Great guide, nice and simple.
As always I'm jealous of your apparent ease to find good condensers.

Nice build, dunking in water is also my preferred way to check for leaks.

I started yesterday about 5:00 pm pulling a vacuum on the unit to get all moisture and contaminants out. I let it run all night until about 1:00pm today. During this time a did a triple evac. That should be plenty good to get a small unit like this cleaned.

Add some r507 - and we have ice. Lots of ice.

Next up is insulation, mesh on suction line and tweaking the charge to a 300watt heat load.

Insulation and mesh finished and load testing is under way. So far I am pleased with this unit. At 300watts load we are holding right around -40C, evaporator temperature, in a 75F room temperature shop.

OK Guys, I have re-arranged my Rig to make room for the New SS. The Pic shows the existing Asetek Vapochill XE (red outline at left top) that will be removed, and the area for the New SS (red outline at bottom).
If I need more room than this, I can move the Rig support table more to the left.

BTW - your the best Bill!

Here in North Texas the whether has gone from Winter to Spring about 5 times in the last week. About 3 days ago it was freezing which broke a record for coldest recorded day ever for that day. With temperature going up and down like that it makes it hard to tweak a charge. I need a steady 75F to get it the way I want it. Well anyway I finally got it finished and I am shipping in the morning. This is my load tester. I set it at 300Watts and charged for right around -36C evaporator temp.

Thanks runmc, I appreciate all the Hard Work it took to Complete this Project and I am eagerly awaiting the sound of the UPS Truck arriving so I can start to get this SS up and running some Benchmarks!

Finally Received the New SS Today and in the first two Pics you can see the Size Difference between My Old Asetek Vapochill XE and the "Monster" Single Stage followed by another Pic showing how Nicely the New SS Fits in the area I cleared next to my Benching Rig.

I Still have to finish installing everything before any Testing/Benching can begin, But it is really looking good right now!
