Over 8300 MHz in Georgia - ASUS Maximus Formula vs Intel Celeron 356

Hello Dear Overclockers! Some of you may already know - we have small overclocking community in Georgia - Overclockers.ge ( http://www.overclockers.ge ) and we are doing our part in the world of OC. I wish to share our success with you too.

About two weeks ago, local university organized LGA2011 stock cooler overclocking championship final stage and I decided to show young overclockers how it's all about extreme OC. That time local frequency record was 7350 MHz, I decided to break it.

First time I used Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 motherboard and despite its pretty unpredictable nature, I managed to tame it and done 7999 MHz - http://hwbot.org/submission/2519435_

At the university OC championship, Gigabyte MB refused to turn on at all. To compensate for that, after 3 days I decided to make a livestreaming OC event, this time with my old ASUS Maximus Formula. MB is quite old, with RMA on its history once and changed chipset, which loves a bit higher voltages than normal for stability. I expected to just jump over my previous 7999, get in 8000 MHz league and show young overclockers everything in live event.

Here are the Hardware used:
MB: ASUS Maximus Formula (X38 Chipset) - Flashed Rampage Formula BIOS, Unmodded Stock MB, no Vdroop, Vcore, OVP mods
CPU: Intel Celeron 356 - Batch: 5634B341
Pot: Kingpin Cooling Dragon F1
TIM: GC Extreme
RAM: 1 x Team Xtreem 512 MB, Micron D9GMH
GPU: Zotac GeForce 9500 GT
PSU 1: Inter-Tech CobaNitroX 750 Watts
PSU 2: Codegen 350 Watts - for fans only
Thermometer: UEi DT304 Apollo IV
OS: Totally stripped down WinXP SP3
and LN2 ofc.


But then my old Maximus Formula begin making wonders... Booted flawlessly @ 8000 MHz and made higher results possible - http://hwbot.org/submission/2520651_

The result has been a great success for our community.

Considering that the CPU is unlapped and MB is stock, there seems to be some room for improvements. I plan to lap CPU and pot, do Vdroop mod to MB and try again. As of Loadline Calibration it gave worse results. 8322 MHz was done with Loadline Calibration disabled.

Not one. It was good luck. Few years ago I exchanged my pentium 640 for this cpu with my friend's friend.

Yes, OgaiB is right, it was the lucky batch one. Actually it is the same batch as wytiwx got in his 8352.86 Mhz result here: http://hwbot.org/submission/2351215_...56_8352.86_mhz

I also have second 356, 2 - 360s, 347, 341 but they all have Cold Bugs and are nowhere near this one.

5634B341 is a very good batch, if I recall correctly Brian y.'s CPU is from the same batch.

Brian's 8213 chip was 5634B348 (2L639797xxxxx) and he also had a 8004 chip of batch 5634B391 (2L632573xxxxx).
mtech had 8015 out of 5634B327 (2L639806xxxxx), wytiwx had 8228 out of 5634B339 and 8352 out of 5634B341 (2L639623A0269), Andre had his 8182 out of a 5634B as well.

My personal experience with 5634B D0 is as follows: 8211 out of 5634B267 (35621222A0425, 5600 air), 7484 out of 5634B321 (2L611580A1004, 5325 air), 7665 out of 5634B327 (2L639620A0926, 5375 air) and 6800 out of 5634B341 (2L639805A2137, 5150 air) so not all of these are golden, you usually only see good ones ever posted online.

You can't imagine how lucky you are to find a 8300+ chip on what basically is your first try.
I have gone through over 300 chips (most of which were from good batches) back in 2008-2011 and only managed to find four capable of 8000+ with best being 8211 (later degraded to 8150-8170). My 8308 result was actually made with a CPU I borrowed from K404 who bought it by accident (together with another 8100+ chip, lol) after having gone only through a couple dozen chips himself.
Smoke has also been binning Cedarmills back in the day, after ~100 random chips and no 8GHz he ended up borrowing some of mine.

Binning over 300 Cedar Mills is impressive only on its own!

Yes, really a lot of luck to find 8300+ Mhz one. What I knew from pre-tests was that the chip did not have CB or CBB at max LN2 temps and it was from a good batch. Really did not expect it to go so high

Now preparing for another session with Vdroop mod to MB and changing PSU for better one, with less ripple on rails. Maybe it will do the job and result improves.
