[Overclock3D] MSI R9 290X Lightning Review

The long awaited by many overclockers MSI R9 290X Lightning finaly arived, but we have to wait till somebody gets it for a real review. I believe this card is going to rip the benchmarks when fully overclocked.

One of the easiest overclockers we've come across. Keeping the switch firmly on the standard mode, rather than LN2 mode, the card only required a gentle nudge to the voltages to bring the GPU up to 1150MHz. The Memory is where the card really shines though, up from 1250MHz at stock to 1650MHz. A massive overclock and one we are very happy with, maybe with a few software changes we may be able to squeeze more out but we are very happy with what we managed to achieve in such a short time with the card and should be a good indicator to what the average Joe can expect when experimenting at home.

Just in case anybody was wondering why I believe the MSI R9 290X Lightning will win many benchmarks. Here from the MSI R9 290X Lightning pdf on page 39.



BTW even some reference R9 290X OC more than 1100MHZ with better cooling. Just for example I manage to OC my Sapphire R9 290 4GB TRI-X 1,225 Core/1,650 MHz Memory. Used for benching only and pretty good for crossfire on air cooling. http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/7986974
