[HWL] MSI GeForce GTX 780 Ti Lightning

The HardwareLuxx Overclocking Team "BenchBros" has received 1 of 12 samples of MSI's GeForce GTX 780 Ti Lightning. The card features the PCB and stock cooler already known from the GeForce GTX 780 Lightning.
Small changes compared to the normal GeForce GTX 780 Ti include the sole use of Samsung ICs for the VRAM instead of Elpida ICs and a special BIOS version with 1085 MHz base clock / 1150 MHz boost clock and 1750 MHz memory clock.

Next weekend BenchBros will be putting the card through its paces under LN2, so stay tuned for the results.

If this really comes true and it doesn't come out, we know Nvidia is to blame. This isn't the first time Nvidia has clamped down on MSI. Particularly with stuff like LN2 bioses.

It's seems Evga is being given preferential treatment.

It's a shame because I consider MSI's cards the best engineered of all the manufacturers. Nvidia does not really have enough of a performance lead at all this generation so I don't know why they would pull these stupid shenanigans.

Intel can do it because their CPU's blow AMD out of the water. Nvidia and AMD are really competitive with each other, so it simply arrogance on Nvidia's part.

That seem weird because there is already a product on the market that already is going to have those problems. The gigabyte ghz gtx 780 ti has boost clocks of 1150mhz. The same as the uprated bios of the lightning. The gtx 780 ti ghz is like 15 percent faster already than stock. I have a hardtime seeing the black being any faster than this if they stick with the same cooler.

Well that's a bloody shame. As has been stated above I also believe MSI builds the best highend cards of all the major manufacturers for both Nvidia and AMD. Can't see why Nvida would even consider putting a stop on this.

Nvidia's are closed minded like a caveman when it comes to voltage control. The lightnings are built around voltage control.

Maybe the reason Evgas is being given leeway is because, its limited by default to the kingpin edition which is rare and without modding the bios, needs one of those evgas controls which are also rare.

i agree. i must say on msi's vga stuff. they've always come through for me personally. ive had the worst luck on a couple msi boards in the neo2 a64 days but i gave them another chance and ive had solid vga's from them since.
i recently sent a 6950 back to them after a couple months expired from my rma but they were cool and sent a replacement card anyways. sorry for the off topic endorsement. i have no ties to any company but im just saying you gotta give credit where its due. from my personal experience the msi vga cards have gone through hell and back and i always come back for more. actions speak louder than words... here is a classic example of msi at its best:

That's a real shame about availability to the general public (like me).

I've been holding off on replacing my Lightning 680's (absolutely awesome cards running 1398 24/7 since week 1 of purchase) with 780 Ti Lightnings.

Guess I'll look at other company offerings now.. Damn shame! The 680's have been nothing but brilliant for me.
