ASUS Rolls Out G-Sync Upgrade Kit for VG248QE

ASUS rolled out an upgrade kit that lets you retrofit your VG248QE monitor with NVIDIA G-Sync technology, letting you take advantage of the display's up to 144 Hz refresh rate for some incredibly smooth visuals (we've seen G-Sync in action ourselves, and it works like it should). The kit is a PCB with a handful of headers. You can either retrofit it into the monitor's body yourself (a DIY video is posted), or take the kit and your monitor to the nearest ASUS service center, and have them do it for you. The G-Sync kit is priced at US $199.

after completing this you have a g-sync enabled monitor and get a certificate that shows Asus monitor assembly line perfect completing.

Yeah, I found 100 bucks OK. But 199 USD is really too much. Not sure if they will make a kit for my monitor anyway.

Did anyone else find that video hilarious? Now I know why electronics are made in asia.

Looks like you lose all your inputs except displayport.

At that price I'll pass, the $199 for the Gsync is almost as much as the monitor itself!

That depends. It might be like the MSI laptops. If you rip it open to replace say the RAM, msata SSD, or the 2.5 HDD it's OK. They won't cover any of the stuff you touch obviously, you break it that's on you. However if say the GPU or CPU fails down the road and you didn't modify that they'll still fix that.

That looks like the tiest DIY I have seen from a manufacturer point of view...
"G-Sync DIY Kit!" its expensive, will void your monitor's warranty and the best part, it cost almost as much as the monitor.

I think only a handful of Nvidia Fans will buy this, also pricing outside US will be astronomic as always.

    Bring on some Freesync Goodness.

am i correct in saying that this gsync has no or minimal benefit if you are pushing high fps? (over 60/120/144)
wouldnt 199 be better spent on your next video card upgrade?

the videos on anandtech were pretty convincing though, personally if i was running an nvidia solution I would go out of my way to get a gsync monitor for my next upgrade, y the hell not

Not if you like to use vsync. It'll feel smoother with less input lag.

I've sort of become accustomed to not using vsync at high framerates thankfully. I would love to be able to use gsync though.

I don't game in 2d on this display, thats what my 120hz catleap is for.

If this module introduces enough improvements for 2d then I may pick one up. Or just wait for the 2560x1440 gsync display.

G-sync is only working through displayport.. ( most basically using eDP standard using DP ports )

To be fair I have had an excellent experience with a monitor RMA with them. They even paid shipping both ways.

    This is pretty disappointing...

The initial line from nVidia was that it was going to be something like an "MXM module" that you would connect between the logic board and the LCD. Instead, you have to remove absolutely all the innards, including the internal PSU and replace it with a PCB that takes up the entire length of the chassis and then use an external PSU...

gSync won't be economical until vendors integrate it into LCD logic boards. It is not something you can just "add in" to existing monitors. The truth is that if you mapped the LVDS pins correctly, the board that is exhibited in the video can work with many other compatible panels as well. This is not an innovation from nVidia as much as it is a sojourn by them into the LCD market...

And remember what happened last time nVidia strayed too far from GPUs... Again, all pretty disappointing.

I second that, I've had up to 4 5970's being RMA'd one after the other, no probs at all.

The pricing on these is about 80 dollars too much. The max this should sell for is 120 with 100 being fair for what's being given.

What Nvidia need's to see that its bad to double dip on profits when your trying to sell this as a feature to sell your videocards.

PhysX had a hard enough time getting adopted as a free feature on their videocards. Coming in at 200 is way too much. This makes Nvidia Shield pricing look awesome.

250-300 dollars for something like shield seems fair because you are really getting another device and more functionality.

200 for this is way to expensive because it is just an add on and your really trying to make your videocards more attractive. With this type of pricing on top of a monitor that originally costs 250, Nvidia needs to put a disclaimer almost that gsync isn't a free feature and requires significant added expense.

Also the voiding of the warranty just makes this diy pointless. One would be better off waiting for hopefully more reasonable pricing of the g sync version of this monitor because one would not need to throw away the guts of the monitor. It seems kind of extreme waste to have to throw away so much of the monitor to do this.

I paid not much more for my entire display. Hell, I've seen the 248qe sell for $200 on Newegg at one point.
