    Same problem encountered

Finally I have an answer after many many long hours testing and re-testing my 290x with every driver available and 3 different OS w7 installations , card has not been volt moded yet. The problem is related to the video card throttling down during heaven , it does it 1340/1677Mhz stable and pass heaven DX11 extreme on water full cover EK H2O block , but the card starts throttling at test #11 once it gets warmed up the clocks goes up and down as well as the FPS ,performance take a nose dive due to the v.core set at 1.43v real via DMM reading , water cannot handle that much heat , LN2 required for stability. Big Thank You to Crustytheclown for all the help. I guess finally I found a Golden card , I am happy as a dog with 2 tails . next will be full volt mods and LN2 to make it scream.

Here is a short video I made of a complete run of heaven at 1340/1677Mhz on ambient temps H2O, I selected and only showed the last 2 test #25 and #26 because heaven last almost 5 minutes to run lol , the fps starts very strong from test 1 all the way until test 10 fps are 186 max , average 182 ,then it takes a big performance hit after test 11 once the card is warm game over :/. darn it took my 6 cards to find a golden one. watch the short video and the FPS. Check it out to see what I am talking about. id you are having the same problems as I did , there is your answer.

I watched your video and I face with the same problem : by using Displayport, the display becomes black randomly when I apply about 1.35 V with ASUS GPU Tweak or +160mV with Sapphire Trixx. On the other hand, with DVI, instead of black screens, the display flickers, becomes blurred randomly. I must diconnect the DVI cable to have a crisp image.

I am watercooled : the GPU does not exceed 45?C and the VRM1, 60?C. Your conclusion is the heat too high for watercooling.

I am not sure that it is the cause when I see our temperatures. Furtermore, I thought that the cause might be the RAM overheating but even at the beginning of benchs, when the RAM is cold, the problem appears. According to me, the causes may be either the VRM circuitry, not stable enough for high voltages. Or the GPU which does not like too high voltages. I tested on around 7 290/290X cards and every card encounters the same problem.

Hi guys, I did try oc my card under h90 and some heatsinks on vrm's and so far I can get:

    Unigine

    Heaven Benchmark v2.1

    FPS:
    72.9
    Scores:
    1835
    Min FPS:
    5.9
    Max FPS:
    167.1

    with gpu @ 1100 and mem @ 1350.

in HWBOT-Unigine-Heaven-Benchmark-Application-1.0.3 i do have 3075 score with aboce settings.

Temps are on gpu max 51 and vrm 1 is 70 and vrm 2 is 58. As soon i give more than 1100 on gpu its starting to crash any benchamrk. I do use MSI Afterburner 2.3.1 with settings:
    CV - 0
    PL - 50
    CC - 1100
    MC - 1350
    FS - 55%

How I can push it forward to don't dmg card? I'm noobie in oc r9 290x and would like to have some good oc for 24h use as i did put it on good cooling.

Pretty quiet thread considering the potential of these things, maybe everyone was waiting for non-ref to get the most out of them .... I was waiting for Lightning but I have given up so I might get a ref 290x with water block and have a go. What mods are you using for 1.36v?

Regarding black screens - I had two different 290x's do this, they would bench well but would black screen within a few minutes of starting BF4, they both went for RMA and I got a store credit for one, hence the wait for Lightning ...

Well its the 290 overclocking thread and lets face it they don't overclock that well.

Mine games np bf4 thuo never had any issues with that its was early drivers that were crap that were pissing me off but lately its been ok even with 2 and 3 cards

1200/1600 np few hours I played this was before the mantel driver I don't even have that driver installed I use 13.2 or 13.3

For those interested I've posted guide to installing Gelid Icy Vision on R9 290X with modified AMD plate for better VRM cooling.

Good and cheap solution to noisy and hot stock cooler which should help with overclocking as well!

Wow not much activity in this thread considering how long these have been out.

    Nice clocks Dumo, as always.

Some tests I got done that I forgot to post up - I am awaiting my cascade cooler to do some hardcore pushing of both the CPU/mem and the GPU

Considering they are still $100 - $250 over MSRP for most models, it does not surprise me one bit.

No overclocking in terms of clocks, but in features instead

    1/4 Rate

    1/1 Rate

Or make it a FirePro W9100 instead...

Releasing the tool to do that would make the Titan to look even more ridiculous, however it would also hurt the FirePro sales...

Have you done any game performance tests? Used to be that changing a Radeon to a FirePro gave increases in a few places sometimes.

    Hello, long time no see.

I have bought myself used R9 290 for 190? and I want to instal my universal EK water cooling on It. Everying is fine just one question: what is that and if I need to cool it?

Flat metal packages are power mosfets for auxiliary power supply ('AUX voltage' in Afterburner). They are fine without direct cooling if ambient temps are low, but for safety I would put a small heatsink on them (at least the big ones).
