I imagine AMD is realizing they can't compete at high price points- bumping the FX flagships back down into "value" territory can't hurt! If you don't mind the high TDP, this is a great deal.

Be advised that there are only a few AM3+ mobos with a properly designed VRM circuit to power the FX-9000 series CPUs so make sure you are using one of these approved mobos or you will have problems and potential failure of the mobo/CPU.
True that. 220W TDP is larger than many entire systems! Before I went with a laptop workstation, I was running an 8120 @ 4.6Ghz and 1.55v (which works out to something like 180-200W max I believe) and it was stable on a Gigabyte 970-UD3 (8+2 phase VRM), but would only hit around 4.2Ghz on an ASUS M5A97 (4+2 phase VRM). Both these boards were otherwise identical in features and priced the same, so watch those specs carefully
