Winamp is shutting up shop

AOL have decided that Winamp is no longer worth maintaining

Personally, I'm truely gutted that it's been closed down, it's been one of the few programs that i have not changed away from in about 12 years.
It's just a shame really

Granted, in this day and age, there is little to no point in getting Winamp Pro because of WMP is usable, Itunes is huge and Spotify is just eating away at the need to have a personal collection.
but Winamp is a nice peice of old school in a day when every piece of software is locked down and non customisable.

There is a petition on the forums to try and get it open source that has just under 3000 signatures since yesterday so it can be maintained and updated by the community. one can only hope that is the case but this is AOL we're talking about after all

Hmm... foobar2000 can go down to 20 Hz but you need to install the Graphics Equalizer plugin, if that's your thing. A good music setup should never require an equalizer to sound good. It's terribly annoying to optimize a good EQ that works for all songs and may take weeks to do.

That being said, I switched to Media Monkey long ago. It's everything I want a music player to be without all the bloat of iTunes. Great codec support, transcoding, burning, handles huge libraries, and its customizable via plugins.

I tried Media Monkey, foobar etc many times but I still like the WinAmp Classic UI and nothing else has come close to the ease of use and compact size. The only player I haven't tried is iTunes but while it's an Apple product that won't change.

I've been using WinAmp since 1999 and used it daily since, I will be sad to see it go, though I heard Microsoft has interest in picking up development of it. Not sure if that is a good idea though, and I can't trust Microsoft making a good product anymore.

just enable limiter and you can turn the bass all the way up. i have 4 10 in speakers and 2 12 inch speakers and 8 tweeters hooked up to my 400w receiver @ 4ohms. also tyvm for that eq with the 20hz selection!! can always use more bass.

I read about this a few weeks ago. My computer at home from high school(circa 1997) still has the old Winamp 0.63 installed or something. I'm scared to boot it up since its running Windows 95. :P

I haven't used winamp in years though.
Those software eq's warp the sound I don't like it.
I don't really like using any soft eq, unless it's perameq's.
Some are better then others though.

I use mpc-be for everything, except for crap that the japanese post (payperview) in real media lol...
With those I still have to use mpc-hc, for some reason the black edition screws up the frame rate, hc does too but they are at least watchable in it.
Playlist in mpc-hc/be suck though..., it's a non-comparison to anything else really.

I use the same in linux too, I can't stand vlc :\ ...

I remember using winamp something like 15 years ago. I would start using it again if MS bought them out...

I believe MS are only interested in the ShoutCast radio
They'll either dump the rest or integrate what they can into WMP
i imagine it will loose a lot of functionality and gain a lot of bloat like skype did

I can see that happening. That's why I'm still using MSN & not moving to skype.

It would be nice to see a compact program like winamp built into Win 9. I can't stand WMP & use itunes. Before itunes, I used winamp religiously for years. Skinning winamp was awesome.

everything is available until the 20th of December (aka This Friday!) so it's worth getting it all now

So, it's the 24th and the website is still up, the forums are still running and you can still download Winamp
I initially though it was AOL being slack
this appears to not be the case though as something is happening behind the scenes, possibly involving either Micro$oft or Spotify (I admit, Spotify would be a wildcard though)
