As a follow-up to our older article on how December-January will play out for AMD's next-generation APU lineup, we have news that the company will unveil, or at least tease its next-generation desktop APU, codename "Kaveri," on November 11, 2013. It's when the company will host its APU'13 event, modeled along the lines of GPU'13, held in Hawaii this September, where it unveiled its Radeon R9 200 and R7 200 GPU families. On its backdrop, the company will also hold its 2013 AMD Developer Summit, which brings together developers making software that take advantage of both CPU and OpenCL-accelerated GPUs. APU'13 will be held in San Jose, USA, and like GPU'13, will be live-streamed to the web. In addition to new APUs, the company is expected to make some big announcements with its HSA (heterogeneous system architecture) initiative that brought some big names in the industry on board.
    The agenda for APU'13 follows.

    4:00 - 5:00 p.m. (PST), Monday, November 11:
o Lisa Su, senior vice president & general manager, Global Business Units, AMD: "Developers: The Heart of AMD Innovation"
o Phil Rogers, corporate fellow, AMD: "The Programmers Guide to Reaching for the Cloud"
    8:30 - 9:30 a.m. (PST), Tuesday, November 12:
o Mike Muller, CTO, ARM: "Is There Anything New in Heterogeneous Computing?"
o Nandini Ramani, vice president, Java Platform, Oracle Solutions: "The Role of Java in Heterogeneous Computing, and How You Can Help"
    1:15 - 2:15 p.m. (PST) Tuesday, November 12:
o Dr. Chien-Ping Lu, senior director, Mediatek USA: "How Many Cores Will We Need?"
o Tony King-Smith, executive vice president, Marketing, Imagination Technologies: "Silicon? Check. HSA? Check. All done? Wrong!"
    8:30 - 9:30 a.m. (PST), Wednesday, November 13:
o Dominic Mallinson, senior vice president, Software, Sony: "Inside PlayStation 4: Building the Best Place to Play"
o Brendan Iribe, CEO, Oculus VR: "Virtual Reality - A New Frontier in Computing"
    1:15 - 2:15 p.m. (PST) Wednesday, November 13:
o Johan Andersson, technical director, DICE: "Rendering Battlefield 4 with Mantle"
o Mark Papermaster, CTO, AMD: "Powering the Next Generation Surround Computing Experience"

I'm hoping that there will be an AM3+ steamroller announced by the end of Q1, on the back of these.

    Main Rig

    Intel Core i7-2600K (SLB8W, E0 Stepping) @ 4.6Ghz (4.6x100), Corsair H80i AIO Cooler
    MSI Z77A GD-65 Gaming (MS-7551), v25 BIOS
    Kingston HyperX 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-19200 Kit (HX24C11BRK2/16-OC) @ 1.5v, 11-13-13-30 Timings (1:8 Ratio)
    8GB MSI Radeon R9 390X (1080 Mhz Core, 6000 Mhz Memory)
NZXT H440 Case with NZXT Hue+ Installed
    24" Dell U2412HM (1920x1200, e-IPS panel)
    1 x 500GB Samsung 850 EVO (Boot & Install)
1 x 2Tb Hitachi 7K2000 in External Enclosure (Scratch Disk)

    Entertainment Setup

    Samsung Series 6 37" 1080p TV
Gigabyte GA-J1800N-D2H based media PC, Mini ITX Case, Blu-Ray Drive
    Netgear ReadyNAS104 w/4x2TB Toshiba DTACA200's for 5.8TB Volume size

If AMD don't release 6 & 8 Core versions of Steamroller I will be leaving the AMD platform for good in 2014. Migrating 12 LAN rigs from 960T's unlocked to 6 Core will go to Core i7's instead of Steamroller 6/8 Core chips. 4 Cores just won't do for 2014-2016/7.

You know that the majority of Intel chips are only 4 actual cores right?

If no AM3+ then this is only HTPC material (because the APU is reportedly having only 512 SP)

Intel has fully separate and high performance cores, but AMD doesnt really have cores but modules, and FM2 is only up to two of those. So going form 6 core PHII`s to two module SR`s in all probability in many situations would be a downgrade, unless AMD pulls off a miracle with performance gains.ATM 8 core(in reality 4 module) AMD`s are at best comparable to 4 core intels.
Its a shame about SR and Am3+, i got into it coz there were supposed to be SR`s for this platform.8 Core SR`s in all probability would be plainly better than 4 core intels in MT and not that far away in ST work.

    Current setups:
960T 6 Cores (took a few bad chips to get the full 12)
    ASUS Crosshair IV Formula (890FX)
    16GB 1600MHz (upgraded from 8GB)
    7870 2GB CF/660Ti 2GB SLI (6 pairs each)
    OCZ Vertex2 120GB SSD

Perhaps I should have been a little clearer. If AMD don't have a 6/8 Core Steamroller by end of June 14 (AM3+/FM2+ or whatever socket) I will be going either 4770K or 4930K (depending on my April bonus). I really want to stick to AMD if I can but considering these have to last 3 years I don't want to skimp on performance. At this rate the only AMD parts I will stick with is the GPU's (280x or 20nm equivalent).

These APU's do have a good place but in Office/Casual/Home/HTPC's and Laptops but not proper gaming rigs. If they OC good I will get one or 2 just to have some fun but nothing more.

Yeah, that makes a little more sense now that you explain what you meant.

To the others I didn't need an explanation of the differences between Intel and AMD, I'm plenty well versed. But thank for at least being courteous about it, my question was more about being confused how he worded it (as going to Intel wouldn't alleviate the "# of core's issue".)

What is needed is a hex-octa core APU these quad ones are trash, I just made a HTPC with a 6800k and its GPU performance is disappointing but on the positive the thing OC/UC very well.

I think sweet spot for AMD APU:s might be six cores because that would bring 50% increase to those FPU:s compared to quad core. To be honest I say this without knowing anything.

More information on Kaveri is expected at AMD?s APU conference this month in San Jose, as AMD has now decided to pay for the flights of press to the conference. Previously press were told they had to make their own way there, which meant that there would not be a big reveal at the week-long show.
More on Kaveri is expected from AMD?s APU conference, which begins on November 11 in San Jose.

6 cores + 896 SP GCN GPU and <130W TDP and it starts getting interesting. But it'll have to wait for 20nm I think
