VGA price war, price drops up to 20% and even 36% just this week ...

    http://hwbot.org/newsflash/2249_nvid...o_36_this_week

That we have been paying excessively for our graphics cards is something we can all agree with. With just two major players on the market, Nvidia and AMD, it can hardly be called a surprise that prices are surprisingly high. The prices usually remain there, until either one forces a significant price/performance improvement. It seems that AMD did just that with the introduction of their new generation of Radeon Rx cards. In response to the new announcements, Nvidia had to lower its prices. When AMD then responds with the same strategy, the consumer wins of course.

Hardware.info, a Dutch IT site, has done some interesting research on the price slashing this week. They compiled a list of the cards (Dutch) that dropped in price, and came to some interesting conclusions. Just this week, the Club 3D Radeon HD 7870 2GB saw a price drop of a staggering 36%! The MSI R7970 Lightning Boost Edition went down almost 25% as well. The EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Classified is also down 25%. Of course this pricing overview is mainly interesting for the Dutch (and Belgian) market, but it is more than likely that the same price cuts happen in other regions.

The question is whether the cards will continue to drop in price, or if this is the ideal time to invest in an upgrade. In any case, an average price cut of 10-36% is a lot for just a week. Are you considering an upgrade?

    780s down 20% ...

since AUD is almost par on par with USD I'm not sure how these guys manage to move stock at all.

Higher cost of living. Minimum wage in AUS is over double what it is in US/CAN for what that's worth.

true, however the disparity in pricing over other goods and services is what makes up the difference as a whole.

the effective rate on wage difference is about 50%

This article has more basic information about it.

    http://www.smh.com.au/data-point/ris...426-2ik16.html

    we're a smaller market too, just 27million.

Its ok since I get any hardware that is not price competitive overseas, still support local industried but only when I know the price adjustment reflects world prices.

i.e. an Arctic Accelero turbo II for $49.00, bought a few not too long ago, and the pricing was comparable with other prices globally.

a titan for $1200... its just not comparable.

In fact, national wholesalers such as synnex, who move tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars worth of ICT stock every year have prices higher than US retailers like Newegg.

    Its monopoly more than anything

same card, $70 difference, and since both AUD and CAD are on a 1 - 1 I'd say we got it worse than you Steve, not that I want to steal the thunder.

You forgot about the blatant GREEED that most AU distries/suppliers have come to accept as their dog given right, ~1200+ bucks for a titan to me is just 'kin insane

About time we had some price competition in the GPU market........THANK YOU AMD for starting the war, I'm more than happy with my recent upgrade, 7970 Ghz edition for 330 bucks delivered from PLE, I think they made a boo boo because a few days later the price went wayyyy up yet they are selling the R9 280X for $379.....................fools
lots and lots of cores and lots and lots of tuners,HTPC's boards,cases,HDD's,vga's,DDR1&2&3 etc etc all powered by Corsair PSU's

^^ yeah, pccasegear has the 270x and the 7870xt (being the same brand and pcb, but about $80 bucks apart.... you usually gotta pay extra for the name

I just picked up a second 7870 Ghz Ed for $150 all up. so that'll go me for a while until 20nm shows its face

    forgot about that.

Guess you'd need a modded bridge or put a 7950 in the middle.

not sure if Pitcairn and Tahiti would talk to each other, its like having your in-laws talking to your other in-laws about sudden pregnancy of the missus...all the cards are there, only the conversation would be awkward as hell.

Yea I always thought they had to be the same subset, like 78xx can crossfire with any other 78xx, and 79xx with other 79xx etc.
    But you put it better

Also aren't the price drops just to clear the old 7xxx stock? I would hardly call it a price war. AMD clear the old 7xxx stock to make way for the R's and nVidia adjust prices to compete with the R's.
It's still good for us though. I picked up a 7970 Matrix Platinum for ?210. They cleared them out to make space for the, ahem, 'new' 280X @ ?330. Wish I'd bought 2 now.
