    FX-9xxx series chips

I got my 9370 yesterday and have been doing some testing tonight. I started a new thread because I didn't want to keep stepping on Flank3r's "Mania" thread...

    Here's the batch:

I did a little testing on the ASRock EX9 first. It's a very capable board! I just feel more comfortable with the CH5F, so I moved it over to the Asus rig awhile ago.
I did push for a CPU-z valid while I had it on the EX9, here's the result:

I'm still in the early stages of testing, but it looks like it's only going to be slightly better than my best 8350 (above average sample)...
Honestly, I kind of expected that, but it wasn't a bad deal @ $290 with the AIO water cooler. At bios "auto settings" both boards overvolted the snot out of this chip (especially the EX9)!

So far power consumption doesn't look all that bad compared to an OC'd 8350. The Kill-a-Watt was showing a system draw of ~450w on the EX9 under P95 Blend.

    Oh Well... Back to testing!

    Hey Dave!
If you want to come up here and give it a spin on LN2 someday just let me know.

Or you could rent me out a day, but it might be hard to drive down to Cincy with a dewar without the factory top in the backseat :P

It's a mixed bag Jay... When the 9370's first came out (@ $600) I swore I'd never buy one...
After the price drop and the included AIO cooler I decided to give it a shot (not using that cooler yet though).

Seems like I didn't get a good sample, but It's still good for ~100Mhz better than my best 8350.
As usual for me, I've been looking for 30 minutes P95 Blend stable first, and this chip did ~4.84 while my best 8350 was around ~4.74 (@ the same voltage)...
I tried pushing the V's higher on the 9370 but temps started coming into play.

On the bright side, power consumption isn't that bad compared to the OC'd 8350 and this new chip does handle V's better if you want to push high clocks for short benchmark tests...

I was hoping for a 5Ghz stable chip @ reasonable voltage, but it is what it is...
For $300 w/cooler I'm not really dissapointed. In typical AMD fashion, it's a fun chip to play with!

Maybe I should have spent the extra $100 and gone for the 9590?

I have done quite a bit of testing with this 9370 over the last couple weeks, I was able to get 5.0 but took 1.536v and you're right about the temps on these it rises pretty quickly. I have since went back and revisited my stability tests.Only this time looking for something with a bit more "bite" to it. To my surprise I think a higher HT ref actually helps stability. This may just be in my set-up but I was able to up mt HT ,NB and tighten down the ram which I couldn't do previously. Using the same volts this was at 4.895G here's a link if you're interested in seeing my settings. http://www.overclockers.com/forums/s...&postcount=739

Mine seems a little bit better. Trying lowest voltage for 5GHz Cinebench R15 now.

~1.39V seems to be the lowest I can run Cinebench R15 3 times in a row at 5GHz.
Don't know what's the problem with single channel, will try to reseat my Ballistix.

PS: I can see charged3800z24 running to the store

I managed 1.38 but I think a bit more power would've scored better.

A bit better... Yours looks a whole lot better!
    Nice silicon man, Gratz...

I got a little distracted playing with the Frankenbox and the AIO cooler that came with the 9370, but I've tested it on the main rig a little more seriously tonight.
I've always used "offset mode" for CPU/IMC voltages on my 83xx's, but this chip is really sensitive to voltages and offset just doesn't do the trick...
Changing from + to - offset (which is needed for this one) never gets me where I need to be, and using "Auto" is totally unpredictable!

Mine seems to get really hateful at high IMC v's and prefers to run @ <1.2v. It doesn't seem to be temp related, more that the IMC just doesn't like higher v's...

Even though it's different, and requires a bit of a learning curve, I'm going to work on using "Manual" mode for voltages.
Looks like it's going to be the only way I'm going to be able to get the most out of this chip...

That being said, I did manage to beat my best 8350 CB15 score by a few points. (see Flank3r's thread).

    I can't get it working normally. I think it's some bios/detection problem.
I have tried two boards - Crosshair IV Formula and Gigabyte FXA990-UD3 rev3.
Both boards does not officially support FX-9370. 50% of the cases CH4F runs it at 19x multi, while the other 50% it's the multi I set in bios.
However, I can't run dual channel, in fact if I leave only one stick in the second slots (both red and black) it does not start and is stuck at DRAM led.

The Gigabyte board on the other hand always runs it at 19x multi. I can change it in Windows, but the behavior is really weird. I can't even see the first square of Cinebench
with the settings it runs in the CH4F. Had to set offset voltage to +0.0. Anything in the negative range does not work...
I'm waiting for UD3 rev4 from the Gigabyte Pi competition and will test it again on that board.

That's a bummer. I think Dave is on the right track with everything set manually. Hope the rev4 works out better for ya.

I have noticed the same thing with the IMC. My chip can hit 3000 on the NB with only 1.28v where the 8350 needed over 1,4v for 2700.
There was definately a learning curve. The 8350 I could just throw the V_Core to it and it would go this one will lock up if the V_Core is set too high. Back it down a bit and it's off to the races. Very sensitive CPUs.

1.28V and 3000 MHz is really crazy. hope, my 9590 will be similar in this . Can you compare example superpi 32M with 5GHz/2.2GHz NB vs 5GHz/3GHz?

Okay found a little time today for those comparisons. I ran Cine11.5 and Aida64. The most noticeable is with Aida in the memory bench. The rest were about the same. I ran at 4.9 since I have a stable OC profile there.

Run diagnostic mode and apply stilts latest bulldozer conditioner before you start superpi.
Definitely will show improvement if you haven't included this already.

interesting, in 32M only around 2.5s (I thought it could be more), big jump seems in Aida memory write.

Thanks but I was talking about PCM05

I expected more too. I'm certain it'll make more of a difference in 3D stuff. I should have tried Wprime might be more noticeable there.
I managed to get a few points for PCM05 now just waiting to submit. Don't want to leavetoo much time for a counter.

I'm trying it right now will post here in a bit

I'm starting to think it makes very little difference and maybe I'm sacrificing CPU cycles by running that high in benches

Manual doesn't allow the voltage to drop when CnQ kicks in, while offset does.
It's fine for pushing benchmarks, but I'm going to have to work with offset since I also use this machine as a daily driver.

Just a heads up for anyone else who may have forgotten...

I finally got my 30 minute P95 Blend stable clocks with this 9370.
In the end, it's only slightly better than my 8350...
Obviously I didn't get a good sample this time around, but at least I have a solid base OC to fall back to if things get squirrely.

NOTE: I just noticed the screen cap was taken @ 22 minutes in, but it ran well past 30 minutes and I also pasted into paint, cropped and saved the file while blend was still running.

Looks good Dave, you may not have gotten the "cherry" but that's still decent voltage for everyday use.
