Nvidia unveils the GeForce GTX 780 Ti

Nvidia Possibly trying to counter the launch of AMD's R9 290X has unveiled their GTX 780ti. It is likely Nvidia will be tight lipped about the specifications until the actual launch of the R9 290x when Nvidia can do as much damage as possible.

LOL@AMD for trying to upset NVIDIA's event. Did you see NVIDIA doing that in Hawaii? No. Maybe if AMD can hold on to their senior execs this time around - they can have a consistent leadership and strategy that bears fruit in a few years. Would be nice to see them come back to their Phenom II glory days (and see the GPU come back to ATI quality).

NVIDIA is holding a press event in Montreal today and it looks like AMD is crashing that party. AMD set up shop at the hotel across the street and allowed the media to come over to run both the game titles BioShock: Infinite and Tomb Raider at 4K resolutions with the AMD Radeon R9 290X versus the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780. This rather bold move came as a shock as NVIDIA flew us up here to attend their press event and here we had AMD asking us to come to their hotel to look at how their graphics card performs. As you could imagine NVIDIA wasn?t too happy with this marketing stunt and sat outside AMD conference room warning their invited guests not to enter. Since we were guests of NVIDIA we declined to visit with AMD here in Montreal, but AMD did send over pictures and results of the demos that they were running inside the room. Some press did cross into ?enemy? lines and they confirmed that the numbers that we were supplied with were very close to the ones they personally ran.

didn't amd also outright challenge intel to compete against the ( then ) brand new dual core cpu (fx 60 ) and experience "true" dual-core computing?

My first reaction to this was "what a move" but it hit me, this Montreal event and GTX 780ti launch timing was "probably" Nvidia trying very hard to crash AMDs party. Was there a Gtx 680ti? Or a GTX 580ti? Why this stupid card as the 780 and Titan are millimeters apart in performance. Where does this product fit in? Titan replacement at lower price? Does this allow Nvidia to slash the price on the Titan without lowering the vaue of the Titan namesake?

standard tactics, it's just to stall people from getting the 290x upon launch. basically they pulled the fire alarm.

Intelligent from a marketing standpoint. If you can get enough of the market who would otherwise purchase the card to hesitate, that might be enough to sway some of them back over to your camp, or get them to wait for maxwell.

Why wouldn't they launch it? All Gk110 cards have too much head room and adding another card, on the table refreshens the brand. The 7xx series has been on the table for 8 months now.

Letting AMD launch this series and not doing a damn thing about, would be really passive and really be dumb on their part, as they would lose sales and really not be exploiting gk110 to its full potential.

A similar situation happened to AMD when the gtx 680 launched. The gtx 680 came in faster and if AMD did nothing with the 7970, it would have been dumb of them since the 7970 has alot of headroom left(particularly if you put a different cooler on it). So they launched the 7970 ghz edition.

The problem with the execution is they let the gtx 680 go uncontested for too long and should have acted quicker. Nvidia is trying to do is clip the wings of AMD from the get go and honestly, they are pulling off a pretty a decent job.

A triple game bundle, a new card from them and unveiling g-sync and letting it be endorsed by industry legends is honestly the most Nvidia could have done outside of launching a new architecture.

Particularly G-sync handling has been particularly well done. Every one that has seen it in person has the response, once you see it in action you don't want to go back. And even people who own AMD hardware or are pro AMD(places like semiaccurate) want it or are bitter that they can't have it because it isn't an open technology. Its rare to see anyone completely dismissive of the potential. Its Nvidia's counter to Mantle and even 4k gaming.

But back to gtx 780 ti. Nvidia enjoys being able to charge a premium over AMD. They have enjoyed this benefit for a long time. If the 290x works out to be as fast or faster than Titan. Nvidia really shot themselves in the foot by pricing Titan as high as it did and this is how it bites them in the behind.

Being faster than a gtx 780, 5 or 6 months after is okay but it isn't that big of a deal, particularly from a value standpoint. Being competitive with Titan, being vastly cheaper and the same price as the gtx 780 hurts Nvidia alot. Titan is their flagship, but more importantly its a 1000 dollars. If Hawaii is anywhere near that performance while being 650 dollars, you got a head turner.

Nvidia capitalized on this just last year. By being faster than the 7970 and cheaper at the same time(on top of being the better brand), they froze 7970 sales and sold like hot cakes after.

If Nvidia is able to send these cards to reviewers and turn Hawaii reviews into 2 card showdowns and manages to come out on top, then they will get to undo the work AMD has done.

It is smart business and a move I would pull.

There was a 7800 GTX, then a 7900 GTX. There was an 8800 GTX, then a 8800 Ultra. There was a GTX 280, then a GTX 285. GTX 480, then a GTX 580. They are all just refined manufacturing of the same process. Same thing with the GTX 780 and the Ti. I do believe the Ti will be faster than a Titan, just with only 3GB of VRAM.

1 less smx than titan and 4gb ? or something like that think for the upcoming BF they need more than 3gb.

OT- Im hope R290 R280 make AMD tonnes of cash ... they need it and 650$ 780 type monopoly we can do without.

Edit - heh remember woodscrews incident ? (gtx 4xx fermi) didnt realise this release and announcement game is a major major thing)

In my opinion, getting consumers to shell out 1000 bucks for a graphics card was genius. NOT responding to AMD by either lowering the price of the Titan or replacing it (780ti) with a lower cost part would be shooting themselves in the foot as you say. Nvidia has set the precedence for the future that they can in fact charge this much for super high end GPU because people ARE willing to buy it, and I think they intend to release High cost GPUs in the future.

9 months old rebrand still good enough to catch new amd 290X

PS. 780 Ti performance = Titan performance, in detail IT IS TITAN, but with 3GB memory

Maxwell will be 20nm, period. TSMC is the one that's delaying it, that's why AMD launched this new RX lineup. Should 20nm be ready for, say Q1 2014, and this Hawaii could have been just an idea on paper...
    Are we there yet?

Q1 2014 sounds like a hell of optimism.

maybe at sample levels but not at mass production levels.
