SD/USB stick capacity

So I recently purchased a SanDisk 8GB microsd card, and once formatted, it had a capacity of 7.39GB. I know they advertise it as 8,000,000,000 Bytes, but if you crunch the numbers, it's actually about 160MB short of being 8,000,000,000 Bytes.

In comparison, my older, cheaper Lexar 8GB microsd card has an advertised capacity of 8,000,000,000 Bytes, but a formatted capacity of over 7.6GB. So it actually has more than its advertised capacity.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Welp, I just had a long discussion with SanDisk tech support, and they basically told me to pound sand. I provided them with screen shots showing that their drive actually had less than the advertised 8,000,000,000 Bytes, and how their competitors drive (A Lexar I also have) had more than 8,000,000,000 Bytes. They just kept spouting nonsense about how "different drives calculate capacity in different manners", but the reality was the more expensive sandisk drive had 160MB less capacity. They acknowledged this and refused to do anything about it.

I urge people to spread this, and stay away from purchasing SanDisk products.

there are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte. 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte and 1024 megabytes in a gigabyte. 8,000,000,000 bytes / 1024 = 7,812,500 kilobytes. 7,812,500 kilobytes / 1024 = 7,629 megabytes. 7,629 megabytes / 1024 = 7.45 Gigabytes.

Minus any software or file systems they have on there to support it, 7.39 makes sense.

There was nothing on it, the drive was supposed to have 8,000,000,000 Bytes. No matter what file system I used, sector size, etc..It never yielded its rated capacity of 8,000,000,000 Bytes. While my 8GB (also rated at 8,000,000,000 Bytes) Lexar card had 8,000,000,000 Bytes (and then some) available.

micron runs sandisk now, so lexmark and sandisk are basically the same company. it is also like $8 for an 8GB and $12 for a 16GB micro sd class 10 so i dont see why you did not just get a 16GB if you needed the extra. if you did not need the extra it is within 5% so they dont care.

I just did the math....

8,000,000,000 / 1024 = 7,812,500
7,812,500 / 1024 = 7,629.39453125
7629.39453125 / 1024 = 7.450580596923828

So 7.45 - 7.39 = 0.06 GB difference.

0.06 * 1024 = 61.44

So really, their 8 GB drive is only 61.44 MB short. Less than 1%. Doesn't seem out of reason to me
