But this time the HW really looks BADASS from AMD .... looks like they are going for it. 600$ for > than 780 GTX they arent gonna be able to make enough of the 500$ version

    Thumbs up

AMD Curacao Pro ?R7-270′ Graphics Card Benchmarked ? Faster Than The Radeon HD 7870/

If those leaks are true then Curacao XT should be on pair with GTX 760 which means nice war in mainstream and hopefully price drop.

No! R9 290X is Hawaii based single-GPU card, 280X is Tahiti based single GPU card

Maybe Curacao Pro = Pitcairn XT + higher clocks + very minor or none optimization
Curacao XT = Thaiti LE which can be found in Radeon HD 7870 XT

So, if i understand correctly, this whole "new" series has only one NEW chip in it ? Or im missing something.
Hawaii is brand new, and the rest of the R series ?I was hoping for a new mid range to be honest something along the lines of 7870.

rebranding and adjusting, so faster at same or similiar prices.
the 7970 seems to get a slight makeover with new pcb

So no process improvements and no die optimizations probably for everything outside hawaii/bonair .
I hope we dont end up with 7970 at slightly lower price and slightly worse(cheaper to make) PCB :-/ .unless maybe there will be some mutant hawaii chip pcb combos.

For the past couple of generations AMD has upgraded their mid range with a die shrink. The card you're looking for will probably come out in the middle of next year.

Tahiti is respun. Higher clockspeeds or lower power? Who knows.

There has to be a cheaper aka harvested Hawaii - what will they do with all the defective dies ? Plus Pitcairn will need a good deal of binning to reach GTX 760

PS: The naming scheme sucks. I'd finally gotten used to X(9/8/7)(5/7)0 and now this. Why do they even need a 'X' at the end ?

Well around 90% of gamers have 1080/1200P screens ,so 7970 performance is enough , if theyre gonna do a new tahiti revision with some advancements in either power consumption or clockspeed its gonna be a good card for high mid range .
There is a possibility of a 7870XT kind of thing (tahiti LE on 256bit bus).Hawaii LE on a 384Bit bus ? That could be a sweetspot.

The X is akin to the older naming schemes where a suffix indicated relative position (Pro, XT, XTX, etc). There will be both a 290 (9950) and 290X (9970).
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

Radeon R9 280X is Rebranded HD 7970 GHz Edition
by btarunr Wednesday, September 25th 2013 Discuss (23 Comments)
AMD's approach to the next-generation product stack isn't structured too differently from that of NVIDIA's current. The company is launching just one big (high-end) chip, codenamed "Hawaii," based on which it's launching the Radeon R9 290X. It's been detailed to death in our older posts. The Radeon R9 280X, on the other hand, is we're hearing a re-badged Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. At the most, expect a slight clock speed bump, and a different reference-design board, but for the most part, it's shaping up to be identical. The approach draws parallels with the NVIDIA's lineup. The Radeon R9 290X is expected to compete with the GeForce GTX TITAN, R9 290 with GTX 780, and R9 280X with the GTX 770. While launch of the R9 290 series will be tightly controlled by AMD (i.e., don't expect non-reference designs for a while), the R9 280X will launch entirely by non-reference designs. The three cards will launch a little later this week.

It may be that the order of the vga's?

    R9 290X = Hawaii XT(DUAL)
    R9 290 = Hawaii Pro

    R9 280X = Tahiti XT (7970)
    R9 280 = Tahiti Pro (7950)
