    RRAM chips production ready...

Looks like RRAM (Resistive RAM) will be a reality very soon. These non-volatile chips, smaller than a postage stamp and able to store 1TB on a single chipand and 20x faster than nand, will change the SSD world big time and for the better.

"CALIFORNIA CHIP STARTUP Crossbar has unveiled what it claims is the first commercially viable Resistive RAM (RRAM) memory chip, a new generation of non-volatile memory capable of storing up to 1TB of data on a single 200mm2 chip.

Touting rather impressive specifications for the RRAM technology, Crossbar's chips promise 20 times the write performance with 20 times less power consumption at a fraction of the size of its NAND flash modules, while also being ten times more durable."

    Full story here.

    More about Crossbar here.

Wish I was one of the startup investors...they are gonna see a NICE return. Now let's just hope they don't get bogged down with patent trolling from Samsung and HP. We might see RRAM SSDs either late next year or (if Samsung and HP are dicks) in 2015.

Lets just hope they aren't expensive as hell.

Edit: Samsung has just announced it's VNAND (Vertical NAND) after 10 years of research and development.

"KOREAN CHIP MAKER Samsung announced the mass production of 3D vertical NAND or "V-NAND" chips today after 10 years of research and development.

The technology, which is also being worked on by many other chip makers such as Micron and Intel, enables memory cells to be stacked on top of each other vertically on the same chip, instead of spread out in a two dimensional (2D) horizontal grid."

    Full story here.

Micron is also jumping on the 3D nand bandwagon as well. Very interesting changes coming to SSDs...can't wait. Looks like all this is coming together at just about the same time as the Sata Express protocol. All I can say is Bring It!!
