Mmm the most charitable thing I've done.
There was a train crash here a few days ago and we all donated blood and volunteered to help as much as we could.
In the end many people died but it's good to know your blood helped saving some people.

Many years ago, I worked with this guy and his father-in-law (I was a machinist, they worked in assembly). The son was an electrical engineer, reduced to assembling pneumatic control panels for silk screen printing machines. I don't remember what the father-in-law's education was but, he was assembling control panels too. They had just immigrated from the Ukraine. Barely spoke any English at all. They had one car for an entire family. The car war running like crap. They basically had no money. I felt really bad for them. Being the gearhead that was (and still am), I picked up the parts for them and did a tune-up on the car. For free. They insisted that they pay for the parts (and they did, I tried not to take the money but, that was not going to happen). At least I was able to give them the labor for free. For me (and most anyone I guess), the job was real easy. I just couldn't sit back and watch some shady garage take 'em for all they had, for less than $100 in parts (cap, rotor, wires, plugs, air filter). The son-in-law eventually got a real job in his field.

I don't know if this qualifies, or if it's the most charitable thing I've done but.....it's the first thing I thought of when I read the thread.

Things haven't been doing too well for them lately They've distanced themselves from friends quite a bit, which I guess is understandable. I haven't heard from them for several months now

Fed a 100 less fortunate people 2 meals for the day on my 21st birthday. Didn't cost very much about 300 $ but is 15,000 Rs here and it buys them 2 excellent meals that even i wouldn't mind eating . Outside temples here we have these places that will feed the less fortunate but they rely on donations .. really nice and people can sponsor 1 meal for 1 person or even meals for a 100 people for a month..
Also i just made a computer for a maid who works at our house.. her son is studying in the 12th grade and needed a computer but they couldnt afford one.. i made them one .. didnt have anything low power so with me so i bought her a AMD APU A4-5300 chip and a cheap fm2 board and got her son sorted

Sorry to hear that. I've sent a few emails over that past few months inquiring about how the pump is working out, but never got any responses. Hopefully things will work out for them. I just would like to know that it is at least helping.

If you ever talk to them, give them my best. Don't let them get too solitude. And keep me informed of anything if possible.

Toolius, it is unusual for a person to do something charitable towards others on their 21st birthday. I think it's awesome.

I'm torn. bluestang and Toolius are both very deserving - bluestang for donating an insulin pump to a friend of mine, and Toolius for doing charity work on his 21st birthday of all days. Two individuals that have given me a bit more hope for humanity.

By the way, bluestang, I got in touch with Jared. He has a new number and email address, which is why he's gone quiet - I must forward you the details. The pump you sent wasn't completely suitable, BUT - they were able to get a $2000 discount on the One Touch by trading it in, so you were a massive help. A big, big, BIG thanks from all three of us

Well, I think what Toolius did on his 21st birthday is pretty damn cool. Give the nod to him, he deserves it

Glad everything work out in one way or another with the pump. At least this way the got a brand new pump at a big discount...good for them. Hopefully things will get a little easier from this point on.

Actually working on trying to get a new one for my wife as well. The one she has is will be 4 years old and out of warranty now. It should be free and clear since we hit our max out of pocket with the baby situation, unless the insurance company pulls some more $hit. Sitting on about $15-20k balance we owe in bills now after insurance paid, so we need this pump to go through without any glitches.
