    Rig or OS. ??? that is the question.

    Playing with bios settings I crashed the linux install I had running.

    That install gave me numbers like:

    Floating Point Speed: 2,269.04 million ops/sec
    Integer Speed: 8,598.09 million ops/sec

    As far as I am aware I have got all the original settings back in bios and a quick run on windows shows rig running @ 2.4 with turbo and mem at 1600 cl10 (as before)

    For the re-install I used Mint 15 (the old was 14). Maybe I messed up something because now I have in the log:

    1693 floating point Mips Whetstone
    8717 Integer Mips Dhrystone

    I am open to any thoughts on this....especially a means to trace the issue.

    Check your running processes to see if anything is taking up CPU (I use top for this, but there's others as well) in the background and make sure you haven't enable throttling in the BIOS or the low priority rank of BOINC processes will let it drop into a low power state.

    Nothing major using cycles but this looks just wrong:

    %Cpu(s): 0.7 us, 0.9 sy, 98.2 ni, 0.2 id, 0.0 wa, 0.0 hi, 0.0 si, 0.0 st

    98.2% for nice? is that just a function of the low priority?

    going to re-install boinc.... it won't read app_config

    Perhaps the old (14) was using a kernel that was better optimized FPU wise for your CPU.

    Tend to agree with you here CN. Now running a fresh install of 15 and a fresh install of boinc and little change to the low whetstone figure @1742

    Will roll back tomorrow and try again

    Did You run a CPU burn test? Some benchmarks would be good, to compare per core speed at a specific task - like SuperPI?
    Have You checked coolers for contact with cpus, how are the temps?

    Perhaps you could test with ubuntu, im getting really good benchmarks with it on my optys.

    OK, I had to know...... The answer is that rolling back to Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon has brought the following benchmarks without any tweaking.

    2266 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU

    8642 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

    Added a fan to help cool the Intel 602 Chip which was running too hot to keep a finger on. Quiet is all well and good but ..... Not really louder now anyway

    I am surprised that Mint 15 runs these cores less efficiently

    The benchmarks may not mean a thing, as they are only benchmarks and point calculations from WCG no longer use the bench numbers. Is there a real difference in task run times?

    I'll check that again tomorrow... A bit tough to do with all this variable work.

    At first glance I would say possibly not but that rig is also running MJ12 just now
