The last two weeks of my life has been shall we say ..interesting..

I got "sick" app 14 days ago. You know the deal, going both ends till you felt like you'd just gone 10 rounds with Tyson in his prime.
At first I thought it was a food thing so I played it smart, tried to recover by keeping hydrated, somne yoguret, going real easy.
For 2 days I thought I was slowly getting better then the night of the third day it started all over going downhill and the light bulb went off that it wasn't a food issue.
The next moring, July 17 I called the Dr..Short version is after hearing the story the lady in his office said "Go to the hospital...
Took me almost 4 hours to get the energy to get dressed and drive the 6 miles to the Hospital.
It was 98F outside and I walked in VERY slowly fiusing go slow but get there.
The first triarge nurse checked my blood sugar and got 522 ( app 100 is normal)
Next I'm on a EKG and 2 mins later I feel like I'm the topic of an episode of "HOUSE" TV show.
ALL the dept heads are in and here I am in no pain watching like a third party wondering what is going on.
Diabetes is funny, you can have massive heart attacks and never feel a thing.
They did tests, transferred me to the LaHey Clinic in Mass, where they did the 5 stents and got me back to close to normal.
No more smokes, no more coke, no more sugar..Damn..

    Whoa.

Did you know you had diabetes or is that a new, recent thing? Stacked on top of all the other stuff... yeesh.

Glad you're still kicking! That's scary stuff.

I tried to call you, but they told me when you are at ICU you can't get calls

Well my friend it is time to get a healthy diet, a nice sleep schedule, my grand father had 3 continous heat attacks and drove to the hospital just like you. He never quited smoking and after that the doctor said he was better than before. He died from a car accident, his best friend was a vegetarian, athlete guy died from a heart attack, I guess life is ironic.

If you can quit smoking by no means do it, but I bet it will be the hardest one, food and the other stuff is pretty easy so take care of yourself please, you got me sick worried.

Ah doctors... do you believe them? House would first visit your home and when seeing so many cores running, he'd definitively come up with a different diagnosis

Glad your OK Dave. The body does have a way of getting our attention. Hope you're back to 100% ASAP. Keep thinking about playing with that SM Z-87 board. That should help speed up the recovery.

Thats nasty stuff. No room for error Dave. My father and grandfather both lost their legs to diabetes. Of couse they didn't follow docs orders. Do what you have to do to get your blood sugar back to normal. Exercise does help reduce the numbers but thats only part of what needs to be done. Take care.

Actually, looking at bewbies has been shown to improve heart health (in those inclined to appreciate them at least). As for the others, smokes are the only things that really should go completely. The rest can either be enjoyed in careful moderation or replaced with something very close.

There's an experimental cure for diabetes type 1... but eh, big pharma ain't interested.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-0...ne-for-tb.html
A tuberculosis vaccine that has been in use for 90 years may help reverse Type 1 diabetes and eliminate the life-long need for insulin injections, results from an early study by Harvard University researchers suggest.

?These patients have been told their pancreases were dead,? said Denise Faustman, director of Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital?s immunobiology laboratory, who led the study. ?We can take those people, give them a very low dose twice and see their pancreases kick in and start to make small amounts of insulin.?

Faustman and her colleagues at Massachusetts General inBoston are working to get the vaccine to market. After their early findings in studies with mice, she said they tried to interest every major drugmaker in developing the vaccine as a possible cure for diabetes. All told her there wasn?t enough money to be made in a cure that used an inexpensive, generically available vaccine, Faustman said.

The vaccine, a weakened form of the tuberculosis bacteria, stimulates production of TNF, a cell-signaling protein that plays a role in cell death. With more TNF, the body can attack those harmful immune cells while leaving the rest of the body?s defenses intact. The vaccine is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for tuberculosis though it isn?t generally recommended for use in the U.S. The vaccine also is approved to fight bladder cancer.
    Study Results

In the study, researchers administered two doses of the BCG vaccine to three patients who had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The patients were followed for 20 weeks and two of the three were found to have an increase in the death of the insulin-harming cells and a rise in elevation in C-peptide levels, suggesting the production of insulin.

?These patients have been told their pancreases were dead,? Faustman said. ?We can take those people, give them a very low dose twice and see their pancreases kick in and start to make small amounts of insulin.?
If I had diabetes, I would get 2 tuberculosis vaccines... what's the worst that can happen?? It doesn't work? Best case, my pancreas starts producing insulin again... Waiting for big pharma for a cure is like waiting for Santa Claus...
