Can you run less than all of the nodes/motherboards on one of those multi-node/multi motherboard servers?
Desktop rigs:
Oysterhead- Intel i5-2320 CPU@3.0Ghz, Zalman 9500AT2, 8Gb Patriot 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM, 120Gb Kingston V200+ SSD, 1Tb Seagate HD, Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64 bit, LG 330W PSU
Flying Frog Brigade-Intel Xeon W3520@2.66Ghz, 6Gb Hynix 1066Mhz DDR3 RAM, 640Gb Hitachi HD, 512Mb GDDR5 AMD HD4870, Mac OSX 10.6.8/Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon dual boot
Laptop:
Colonel Claypool-Intel T6600 Core 2 Duo, 4Gb 1066Mhz DDR3 RAM, 1Gb GDDR3 Nvidia 230M,240Gb Edge SATA6 SSD, Windows 7 Home 64 bit
Intel-Xeon-L5630-2-13-GHz-12M-5-86-GT-s-Processor-SLBVD
What do you think of a pair of 5630's seems like fair points per watts value. Does anyone know of some dual 1366 boards that can overclock at all ?

need to finish my gaming rig lol
E5640 are pretty cheap just liked the low TDP of the 5630's but if I have some overclocking options I could under volt the E5640 if i wanted to. Just did not like the price of the one SR-2 I found lol. Was hoping for around a $200 build for the cpus and motherboards but not sure what the best deals are right now.
cloud rig, 8 L5520's 64 threads at 2.26ghz, 225$+shipping

Yeah but the L5639's and 5640's are 60W vs 40W and six cores vs. 4 cores. Also, just based on the benchmark numbers for regular dual E5630's you aren't really getting that much bang for your buck.

You won't be able to find a dual LGA 1366 motherboard and decent 5500/5600 CPU's for $200. Once in a while I see some used Supermicro X8 boards for $100 and matched pairs of X5570's for $150.
Also you are forgetting about needing heatsinks(2). And you'll need a beefy enough PSU for two processors.

That's actually a pretty good deal. I haven't seen a dual node/dual board deal like that since before Christmas, and that didn't include CPU's. Though you will end up paying for a HSF, drive(s), drive sleds, and RAM. Still, cheaper than assembling two whole system from scratch. And you could always find some faster CPU's at a later date.

Side note - does hardforum hate Newegg or something? Every time I click a link someone posted they put this large annoying message in the center of the screen to use some plugin to shop at Newegg and buy from Amazon "for cheaper" (which in my experience is only on a few items here and there anyway). Really annoying.

About 178 Kw/h per month which is not a lot more than a 2600K/3770K overclocked to get Half the points. based on that the the cost of 2 IB rigs over here is about $2k for the good stuff. For the rig in question I paid a total of $1470 which is about what I would expect to have to pay for 2 secondhand 3770K setups. Agreed....that is a lot but if I save 150Kw/hrs per month
based on the above assumptions:
Cost of ownership for 3 years this rig is $3286 and $605 per year after
cost of ownership for 3 years 2* overclocked 3770K's is $4497 and $1009 per year after
aaah.... The joys of living in UK with the associated taxes and power bills.
