I think Stilt has a good point. There are very high requirements for cooling such a chip and if it's true AMD readies those 2 models we all want to know how all of that is going to work without something burning up. It's true it's targeted at enthusiasts and all, but still the requirements are there and it only takes one uninformed customer to burn something up and create a **** storm in some forum.

Many people won't care about TDP tho, they just want 5Ghz Vishera out of the box without doing a thing in BIOS, which is understandable. They would hit this TDP by manual OCing anyway, AMD just provides cherry picked parts that can function without errors (in linpack?occt?) if properly cooled.

They should be more competitive at 5Ghz. I do not think the guaranteed OC is worth $700 though. As noted, a person could buy a 8350 and a $100 closed loop and have the same thing. (or close enough to it to not matter)

Definitely worth $400 though in my opinion.

4ghz 8 core for 300$ and ready to drop it a bit should intel do the same. Aim that at the gaming crowd it SHOULD do well ..... but AMD has lost a lot of street cred over the last 5 years its gonna take time to repair and some really good chips.

edit- lol just noticed 8350 going for 200$ (WOW thats insane value !!!)

its not easy get really stable 5 GHz at FX-8350 with decent cooling. Now you will have better than average chip, so it help you in OC. As informal said, its for enthusiast. Not only Intel guys are enthusiast (3970x or dual xeons etc) but also at AMD side exists.

As we have seen already... many FX-8450s will run close to 5 GHz. on a highend AM3+ mobo so it's no surprise at all that AMD is able to offer a 4.8 GHz. base and 5.0 GHz. Turbo mode - contrary to what some "experts" have advised.

The 220w figure may be the total power consumption not the actual TDP. Since people are already running 4.8 GHz. FX-8350's without overheating using highend AIR cooling, there really should not be a big issue with these CPUs. I'm guessing that AMD might pair these up with an H2O cooler as they have done with some highend CPUs in the past. H20 cooling might not be necessary but at least it might be an option.

I'm sure he just meant 8350.

    ---

In my experience at least, I was unable to keep an 8150 cool with a Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme which is a really capable HSF The H100 I had on my bench could do it. Fortunately, the 8350 fares a bit better, but I still have to imagine water will be more or less required.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

Had a better look at the Gigabyte sheet.

It says "AMD next generation FX".
Vishera is no next gen, it is almost two years old already

I assume Gigabyte refers to "TJ", which still should pop into AM3r2.

The sheet is for Rev 3.0 990FXA-UD7 which has some changes to the VRM.
Yet it appears to be a multiplied analog VRM.

Not really tho, its 5ghz for a cpu, nowhere there is mention of a 8 core 220W TDP FX ,richland got some nice optimizations to get higher frequency, seems possible vishera could get a revamp too.

“Vishera” will also carry over into 2013 but with some enhancements over the 2012 version.
So, could we call 5Ghz chips Vishera 2.0?

Vishera 2.0 would probably have updated P states like richland?

Would be cool if FX-9000 came with mirror lapped finish hehe

There are really no "actual" changes in Richland in silicon level.
Hybrid Boost and cTDP are just basically software features and the changes to the memory controller are just different kind of calibration.

Althought, Richland should be based on newer node version than the Trinity parts currently available in retail.

Still Richland is a good mid-life update to Trinity.
cTDP especially is a very nice feature for low power desktop and mobile purposes.
Also the fact that Richland officially supports 8-banks (four double sided DRAM modules) at DDR-1866 is a nice feature too.
The memory controller has been calibrated for high load rather than high clock on Richland.
