    Wicked! Conformal Coating for motherboards!

    http://www.asrock.com/news/index.asp?cat=News&ID=1306

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=CSXJj6gzsfU

The special layer of Conformal Coating makes ASRock's motherboards invulnerable to conductive liquids, so overclockers won't have to worry about accidently spilling liquid nitrogen, liquid helium or even clam chowder over their motherboards while they are overclocking. Along with conductive liquids, Conformal Coating also protects the motherboard against dust, corrosion and extreme temperatures. It is the ultimate armor for the upcoming 8 Series motherboards.

I don't plan on spilling clam chowder on my motherboard, but nice to know it would be protected regardless

For normal watercooling I don't think it's necessary... It would be good to LN2 though...

    Gimmick.

Also, I don't trust the quality of their conformal coating, judging by how relatively timid the test appears to be in the video.

I do like AsRock though. PRobably my favourite vendor.

Well, for leak testing &/or just possible malfunctions in a block, it's a nice security blanket to have.
    You must [not] advance.

i sometimes get water on my boards and can get 95% of it with a paper towel, and usually turn it on within minutes of a small spill. but for those times where i forgot some and the pc wont boot, its a little scary if i break anything in the process. extra security is worth a few dollars when spending hundreds on WCing. so im all for this.

What did you want? To submerge the motheboard under water?
It's clear that this conformal coating doesn't protect the socket pins, contacts from memory slots PCIE slots and all slots.
And SATA conectors, etc. You spilled water there ant start the pc don't expect to work.
It's clear that so, the motheboard it's more safe not to have an electric short circuit.
But still 100% safe cannot be.

Neah,..I'm skipping this one. When they successfully manage to pass beerproof test, I might reconsider, otherwise....

Sight unseen, but it might also protect the board from the gentle drop of a metal object such as a fan clip or screw onto the board (?)

I agree, I would love to have a coating like that on my video cards and motherboard.

Wouldn't this be useless if you short any other part thats not coated in this? ie cpu, vid card, sound card, ram sticks, etc? Wouldn't the short kill the mobo anyways (along w/the parts)?

I've had a tubing clip break and had distilled water end up on my board while it was on... no issues at all and it ran for about half a day

Super hydrophobic coatings are impressive. Along with hydrophilic coatings, it is what makes Immersion Lithography work
