Not surprising, the CPU industry is dealing with diminishing returns from quite a bit ago. Intel efforts are focused on GPU performance more than CPU performance, they already have enough of that.
The truth is that the average PC user, from some generations ago, has already much more CPU performance than what it really needs. Intel showcased this with the Atom: It was a slow piece of trash, yet still for the everyday Netbook, albeit most people complained, they seem to simply get used to it. If Intel had rounded up instead of down with it, it could have been a much better Processor, but the Atom besides power efficiency was made to be cheap as hell (The die was very small), not to perform. Point is, even if we were using CPUs three times as fast than a Phenom II, the VAST MAJORITY of users wouldn't even notice it, or need it on the first place.

Its hard to compare...I know, you know... FX-4300 is something near as 2C/4T, in right schema as 2CU/4C/4T. Phenom II is 4C/4T. So FX-8xxx will be still in performance compare to some 4C/8T. Example FX-6300 is very good CPU in price/performance ratio

btw, Simon, my record is now 9.17 points :-D. I believe, Steamroller FX in 2014 will be in most multithreads better than i7-4770K HSWL. Vishera and fixing some bugs in BD help very well in improvements clock to clock.
Only theory...clock to clock, BD has score 6.0, Vishera 6.4. At stock after BD 6, Vishera 6.94, SB 2600k 6.85, Ivy 7.52, HSwL 8.05. SR FX could have in topmodel around 7.5-8 points at stock. And we know, Cinebench R11.5 is not the best scenario of FX
