All this slow growth is because of consoles and tablets. There's more money in the portable and crappy hardware than there is in the high end high performance hardware. Also games aren't evolving because consoles work on 5-10 years old hardware for years on end. The two main culprits : Apple (with their ipad) and Microsoft (with their x-box).

Also AMD is not bringing it.

but we must remember one good things.Vishera improvement clock to clock against buldozer was better than Ivy bridge to Sandy.If Steamroller will be similar gain, it will be good for us...And a bit near to Intel again. So we must hope for all good as we can see in gpu fight.

Yeah, we've been waiting for the 8 core version for a year and a half already. Call me pessimistic, but given Intel's lack of interest thus far in producing an overclockable 8 core, I have very little faith that they'll suddenly decide to grace us with one anytime soon...

Most of the tests run only showed a 5-7% improvement...only SuperPI showed double digit gains. The issue is Intel's attitude toward enthusiasts. They could have easily released an 8 core version, and still had a way to get rid of the rest by making them into non-extreme 6 or 4 cores. This is 2013...a 6 core CPU doesn't qualify as "Extreme" any longer (IMO, it didn't qualify for SB-E either). "Extreme", at least in my definition, means exceeding boundaries, pushing the envelope and going above and beyond. This turd they've labelled an "Extreme" CPU does none of the above and is a CPU so mired in mediocrity that it is more deserving of the title "Celeron" than that of "Extreme".

Whatever they do for the consumer line, fine. What I really want to see is the workstation Xeon unlocked...and I really don't care what they want to charge for it. The point is that Intel has absolutely zero option for the enthusiast who wants it all, even if they're willing to pay for it. You can either have an unlocked piece of crap that's been labelled an "Extreme" or you can have a fully enabled, but fully locked down Xeon. You can't have both...not for any price.

Yeah, and it's even less. More like 5-8% in most benchmarks. And this is with cores that are running 100 Hz faster already!!! (3.5 GHz vs 3.6 GHz).

Is PC gaming that large of a segment to blame the lack of improvement on that single aspect?

I'm not asking this as a rhetorical question. I really don't know what consumers typically use computers for. I'm ignoring people that only check email, facebook, etc. I mean those who do CPU intensive work: gaming, photoshop, cad, etc...


I agree w/ the AMD statement, as most people here do. AMD need to figure out something to make a huge jump. It doesn't seem like we'll have those AMD athlon days of true competition for a long time, if ever.
