My system is so overdue for an entire system upgrade. I believe my platform carries the NB on the motherboard, that's how old it is. I must say though that the performance is still there. Runs BF3 just fine at 19:10 resolution. My recent upgrade was a SSD and now it's almost as if I upgraded my entire system. I don't see how buying a new cpu would make things faster...everything is almost instant.

If overall system responsivness and such is what you judge a system by you dont need much.

There are 2 things that stand out when it comes to system responsivness and fluidness and so on... the move from single core to dual core. And SSD.
So if your gaming experience is satisfying for you, there isnt much reason to upgrade. Its moot for you if haswell is 5% faster or 50% faster if you never are hold back by what you already got.

Exactly, I've been using a quad core cpu for the longest time now. Its too bad that they still don't have any plans for a hex core cpu on their mainstream platform.

Our graphics go nowhere because consoles only evolve to the next platform every X amount of years.
Our processors are not going to get much more powerful now that the mobile market is the key battleground, efficiency is the name of the game and Intel is at war with ARM.
Sorry but you don't need 6 cores to play Angry birds, games are still coming out in DX9.... I'm pretty happy we even get updates as often as we do, except they should unlock everything to keep pc enthusiasm going.

My second 3570K died after a few months under water i guess taking off the IHF is the signing of a death warrant in my case. The employee discount helps but i can only get a limited no of cpu's per year so moving back to 2500k/2600k it OC's very well and is very tolerant to voltage. I hope HSW is better in terms of tolerance scales but then again SOC's are often not.

I had a few 2600K CPUs with problems.. But those were after a year or so at constant 60-80% CPU load. Warranty to the rescue.

All 3770s are just humming along for now. No overclock, naturally.

How much voltage did you use? Im guessing the temps where quite good after delidding them and using water?

It's fairly impossible to have any useful hindsight in a situation like this where if the cpu: "just died" as you have little to no way to check what exactly went wrong.

Silicon is very brittle and I think you can find a fair amount of users on this forum that has maybe had a run in with a cracked die on good old Socket-A. Hence QuadDamage's comment.

I still see no reason to upgrade my solid six core 980X.

As long as it doesn't finally just burn up, Intel is giving ZERO reason to upgrade the old high end 32nm parts.

I have never in my life had a CPU stay as competitive for as long as this little 980X that sits happily at 4Ghz on stock voltage. I can push it to 4.4Ghz if needed - easily.

Best computing investment ever.

So the deal is until AMD can someday magically compete for top total performance, Intel is never going to push the high end again? It is getting silly!

Of course it's all only rumors at this point but word is IB-E may be >6 cores. Even at 6 cores it should be a (finally) worthy upgrade from gulftown. My 980x has been great to me too I'm just a little bored now. Watching everyone play on sb then ib while I sit on 1366. I'm ready for new goodies.

Had a similar notion before i let go of my 990X setup and getting a 3770K based system but after a lot of research i ended up getting a 3770K system. The most helpful being something from bittech let me see if i can find it.

The point being 3770K was a good alternative than the 990X, it has its problem being quad core but things are not all bad efficiency and power usage are much more improved. I was using a 1200W heavy unit to power the 990X beast which had already murdered a Glacialtech AX950 but now with the 3770K i am using a frugal 750W corsair unit.

Intel can not have a 6 core part that occupies the same TDP as a 4 core part in the same process. So they can either release a higher number of cores in the tick or increase die size which intel does not want. Quad cores will remain till a good enough octa AMD is made and from what i hear Intel has a backup plan even for Broadwell in terms 6 core processor not sure about HSW because of imposed TDP figures.

Thank you. I was thinking of "hanging out" on haswell until the end of the year when I did my real upgrade which is to add a third titan and ib-e. I had kind of given up on this but I might consider it now.

Wow they're getting really close in graphics performance to Amd's APUs. They also seem to overclock well, kinda makes me wonder how a high end intel graphics card would perform :p
