    So I bought a 7970...

I just wanted to let you know, that I loved you guys so much I decided not to buy a Titan. I know it was a terrible sacrifice not spending a ridiculous amount of money on a video card.

Actually I wanted to do 5x1 portrait eyefinity, but when I got home and realized the card I bought wouldn't support 5 outputs and I couldn't span outputs across multiple cards I changed my goals to 3x1 portrait and I will use 144hz 1080p monitors

all down time, will be dedicated to crunching.

In seriousness, if I add 2 more cards, would an ivy bridge or sandy bridge be able to keep up with them for crunching?

Congrats on making a home for a 7970. If you stick with IVB or SNB, get a board with the NF200 chip to add more PCIe lanes. The biggest limitation is CPU cores to run that portion of the HCC WUs. You're better off getting another card, and spending the money for the 3rd card on a 6 core SNB-E CPU.
