    I7 2600k @ 5Ghz or 3930k@ ~4.5Ghz

I'm currently running a 2600K at 5.0 Ghz with 1.41v. I can pick up a 3930k with motherboard (Gigabyte G1 Assassin 2) for a *very* good price but I'm pondering whether as to how much benefit I will see.
My computer use is varied but I do a lot of encoding to Mpeg4-ASP (Xvid) and Mpeg4-AVC (x264) also a bit of photo editing and gaming as well as music production. Will probably also run some VM's..

Has anybody done something similar or that can give me anecdotal advice as to how much (if at all) improvement I will get?

In games u will gain squat,in other stuff you mentioned it is definatly worth it.Basically u can clock that 3930K to a 4.5 and u will be more than satisfied with the gains.

For gaming, is MUCH better 2600K, because higher freq (5Ghz).

Also is good for video conversion too because hyperthreading, personally I'll stuck to that 2600K, if you have good cooling, because on full load 2600K will give less heat than 3930K, even on overclock 5Ghz vs 4,5Ghz.

What the heck are you talking about? You do realize the 3930k is 6 cores with hyper-threading making it 12 virtual cores right? Seems to me you think the 2600k is the only one with the hyper-threading. Plus you realize more and more games are going to multi-core cpus now also. More cores is always better anyway. If he is using any type of software that will use all the cores on the 3930k, it will smoke the 2600k. Honestly not sure what you are talking about. Seems you are lost on this subject though.

Just to update, I got the 3930k and I've been using it for a few months now. I'm running it at 4.8 Ghz and it's faster even in the games I play. For encoding it's ~30% faster which can make a big difference.

On a Asus X79 Sabertooth motherboard. Using the Offset method with +0.010 which equates to 1.37v under load. Cooling is a Phanteks ph-tc14pe but my Corsair H100i arrives tomorrow with replacement SP120 Performance fans. My temps were ~80c under load so I want to see if I can bring that down by about 5c at least.

The settings in large part I used can be found in an in depth and informative video on youtube by an Asus rep/engineer who goes into what they consider best advanced settings to overclock. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx2z07sFM2I
