[DT] - Samsung/Acer Bash Windows 8 For Poor PC Sales (2in1 post)

    http://www.dailytech.com/Samsung+Exe...ticle30088.htm
    http://www.dailytech.com/Acer+Boasts...ticle29757.htm

Dong-soo, a Samsung executive, recently said that Windows 8 is "no better than the previous Windows Vista platform", according to Forbes. The exec also blamed the poor sales of ultrabooks on the "less competitive Windows platform."
Acer and many other computer makers are looking for alternatives to the Windows operating system because consumers continue to stick with older versions of the operating system rather than upgrade to the latest version.

?Windows 8 itself is still not successful,? said Wong. ?The whole market didn?t come back to growth after the Windows 8 launch, that?s a simple way to judge if it is successful or not.?
Glad I'm able to start finding deals on Windows 7 keys again.

There is some truth in their words... though there are aspects of windows 8 that I do like (namely, that it's seemingly more light on resources/more responsive compared to windows 7), I can't help but think of windows CE on pda's... as I used to use them... back then, they tried to force a desktop environment on to a tiny 3.5" screen (start menu, typing in words, very small icons, etc.)... whereas they seemed to have sort of repeated the mistake with the tiles (big icons that swipe/scroll...great for phones/tablets..but perhaps not the best for the desktop environment), I'm glad that they at least put in the typing of programs for quick fetching... otherwise, I like being able to see a whole bunch of my most used programs in a list that queries as a I type to fetch them...if windows didn't force the tiles upon the user in the desktop environment.. I'd like it that* much more, otherwise, for the most part, it's a quicker/more response windows.

edit*: also, I do find that the fact that when I hit the "start" button, it goes to a friggin whole new screen... it just annoys the hell out of me... as I feel like it breaks my work efficiency... vs the start menu in windows 7... when i click on it, I can still see my desktop/ whatever is on my screen that I'm working on, hence it doesn't break my attention away from my work... whereas with windows 8, the whole friggin screen environment changes to the tiles... maybe it's just me, but it annoys me, I like to see what I'm working on, while I load a program that I'm probably using in-conjunction with what I'm working on.

Also, I bash Forbes comments on Samsung moving away from Windows 8 due to it being more memory efficient.. as arm devices are even more so efficient(top out at only 2GB of ram), it's more like... since the trend/market is moving towards arm devices (ie: tablet/phones), it's more prudent/wise to focus your business where the market is growing/expanding.

some liked win8 some didn't liked but imo the main problem is not liking or not liking win8 problem is win7 is still fresh enough to not make people consider new windows os. also for most of the people old hardware is more then enough so combining these two people stoped upgrading like they used to before.

Enthusiasts are waiting for Haswell. Most computer buyers are clueless consumers who usually get drunk on the kool-aid. They haven't a clue what processor or chipset is in the device. The only thing that matters to them is whether or not they can get on Farcebook with it.

Most consumers like new shiny things, they think having the latest gives them some kudos, so if I am honest I am surprised Win8 has done so badly even with the bad press.

I think sales are poor because the press slagged Windows 8 and more people are buying tablets instead of real computers.

Still anything that drives Microsoft toward chapter 11 or worse brightens my day.

I really hope Microsoft will finally pay attention to the negativity towards Windows 8 and not repeat the same mistake in their next OS, it seems like Microsoft is good at doing that.

Metro on desktops or non-touchscreens laptops? No thanks

Microsoft want to force the people to swallow like a bird the stupid metro ui with full screen apps or nothing and icons for blind people in a try to sell more phones and make people closer to their mobile platforms, but people doesn't like and we aren't going to change to a system like that.

My brother actually bought a Windows 8 notebook in Australia and was so thoroughly disgusted by the experience that he returned it. Since there were no Windows 7 machines being sold, off to Apple he went.

I have to agree with some of the comments in this thread. Windows 8 just doesn't work for standard notebooks and even the "convertibles" a a disaster. Basically, it is neither tablet OS nor desktop OS and strides in the grey area between. That isn't a good thing.

Curious. Had he tried one of the apps to bring the start button back to avoid the Metro UI?

What I find funny about Windows 8 is we had to upgrade just over 4k systems to 8 in January and we are now being told to put 7 back as nobody likes 8 & actual productivity is dropping. Still, at least it gives me more work.

This is the biggest issue with most people.

If the start menu were brought back as a option (why not?!), I think everyone would have adopted win 8 & decided which version worked best.

Yes. But in his words: "screw this".

For professional like him who wants straightforward interfaces and a quick setup process, Windows 8 is just unacceptable.

The only single issue I have with not moving to Win8 is the forced metro gui, if it was optional I think win8 wouldn't be getting much negative press, maybe that they didn't do enough then.

I use Stardocks Start8 which is great imo.

But that brings up the argument... we have to purchase a 3rd party app in order to bring back a feature that should be there in the first place ?

It's funny really that if you use Start8 or another app like that Win 8 is pretty much like Win 7 except for a few things really. What was MS thinking ???

my aunt wanted to get windows 8 and likes it, she bought a samsung laptop and really likes it. I can't really understand how someone can really like it, lol i hate not having the startbar, and after 2 days of setting it up for her(office had major issues installing), I still didn't like it.

They need to bring back the start menu to the desktop, stupid idiots, why would you remove it in the first place, that is a big difference between windows and mac, but they are just trying to make it for people less computer savvy than OSX users. Why should one have to pay for an add-on of something that should be free, or at least optional.

    Arent there a free alternative?

But, free or not, this issue shouldnt be here. The option should have been there from the start.

so from what i am observing.
windows 8 pro is $109 oem, for a new task manager program?
but you have to pay a third party now $3-$10 for windows.

does that mean anyone can now make windows. the only thing unique about windows, being the start menu.

windows 8 reminds me of the windows 3.1 that everyone was all too glad to get rid of, due to how cumbersome and time consuming the tiles and folders of windows 3.1 was.

i like windows 8....the start menu is not really that big of a deal in my op. but the metro interface is useless because i need to have uac turned on for it to work....screw that noise, i am not going to keep right clicking programs and selecting run as admin all the time, or keep pressing yes to run an application.

It's good to see also the big players complaining . Yes the core of W8 is good , but lots need to be done .
See the mail app for example . It works , but VERY basic . You can't even move mail to a subfolder etc. .

For WP8 the phone is ok but very basic functions aren't even there . That's also why Samsung doesn't make big marketing campaigns for their Ativ series probably . Android is much more mature .
Check here for WP8 user suggestions and be astonished as to how such very basic functionality isn't there yet .

Yes, I use the free Open Source Classic Shell.
I nearly never see Metro, just a small part when I hit Win-P to turn on a second screen.

they also need to offer easier setup of defaults because its really annoying that when you open nearly any common document, the app version is used instead of the desktop version. it takes a few minutes to fix, if you know your way around a PC, but i bet 80% of the users out there have no idea how to change defaults.

otherwise i am one of the few apparently who think win8 is just fine. do i NEED it over win7 nope.
