Where do you buy Xeon E5-1650s?

Is there a reliable source for rare chips like these? I can't find them anywhere. I realize they are in shorter supply, but they seem like they are in zero supply...

Those chips aren't the most popular with the DIY crown, but Acmemicro has them and Servers Direct has them as well. Just out of curiousity, though, why did you choose that model of chip?

i think they are in short supply since they are a rather pointless part, they are 1 way QPI so they are just a the hex core K edition but cannot overclock. most of the time if you needed ECC you would get the chip with more cores and lower clock speed. it also looks like it was phased out and is now OEM only.

i found a couple, i have bought things from both of them, they are east bay and local to me.

they only work in 1P systems, so if you though you could run a 2P on the cheap it wont go, and you cannot overclock them. the chip also only does not support FB dimms since it is a 1P part and the 2011 has a built in checker on the memory buss so they seam to not need ECC with 8GB dimms.

I agree...those chips are about as useful to the DIYer as a rubber crutch is to Tiny Tim. It's basically a hard locked 3930K that supports ECC...

Interesting, I was not aware of that limitation. I must have missed that in the intel spec documentation (it's listed there?). I was curious about them since they are some of the cheapest hex core server parts.

the parts that start with a 1 are 1 qpi and the ones with 2 are 2qpi.

if you look at the spec sheet
    http://ark.intel.com/products/64601/...?wapkw=e5+1650
it says "max cpu configuration 1" under package specifications.

Thanks for the information. The nomenclature is obvious and I should have seen it!
