my website/torrent/cloud server:
specs:
SuperMicro X7DCL-i
2x Intel Xeon X5460 with Noctua NH-U12DX heatsinks
6x 4GB Hynix DDR2-667/PC2-5300 ECC+REG
Areca 1210 (yellow SATA cables are from DFI nF4 mobo! :p )
Mellanox ConnectX-2 (10GbE NIC)
Intel Desktop 1000/Pro (1GbE NIC)
CoolerMaster Silent Pro 1000W (overkill, yes, I know :o )
2x Hitachi 2TB (media for website)
Toshiba 3TB (torrents/cloud)
Crucial C300 128GB SSD (VMs)
Intel 330 120GB (OS: Windows Server 2012 R2)
Scythe fan controller (temp probe attached to northbridge heatsink)
Lian Li PC-A10B
the two mid-mounted fans are to cool the Areca and northbridge. The Areca didn't really need it, but the northbridge was getting rather toasty with no forced/direct airflow (~60C iirc).

I got bored with regular single-socket setups and picked up some cheap used server parts to play with. I initially purchased a Intel S2600CP2J Dual LGA 2011 eATX, 2 x Xeon E5-2670 (16C/32T), and 64GB DDR3-1600 Reg/ECC for $360 shipped. I then sold the 64GB DDR3-1600 Reg/ECC for $200 on eBay and paid only $44 for the 32GB DDR3-1333 Reg/ECC I'm now running with - so the net cost for the combo is only $250. That's less than a standard i7 K CPU alone. Then I picked up an open box Corsair Carbide Clear 400C case at Microcenter for $40 which, although advertised for E-ATX, only had 3 of the appropriate mounting holes for the Intel SSI EEB motherboard. So I had to use some imagination to get it installed but all is well. It does make for a compact server since it is no bigger than a standard ATX case
CPU Cooling is supplied by a pair of Cooler Master Hyper 212s with the CPU2 fan mounted on the back side in a pull configuration. Doing that provided extra separation between the two heatsinks that reduced CPU2's max temp by 5C so both run at 65C under 32 thread 100% load. Used some Noctua PWM NA-RC7 Low Noise Adapters to slow the fans down and keep everything nice and quiet. The PSU is a Supermicro 665W server supply I've had for several years powering my previous X79 and X99 builds. Stuck in my mini GTX 1060, a $15 USB 3.0 card, hooked up my USB Sound "Card" to complete the system, and installed a few SSDs I had to get it going. A photo of dubious quality is provided for you viewing below.

Thanks, I humbly accept this prestigious award!
But how about the smallest Xeon server? Housed in a tiny Spire PowerCube 501 I have a Xeon E3-1230 V3 4 core/8 thread CPU running on an Asus H81I-Plus/CSM mini ITX board. It's powered by a SeaSonic SS350-SFE 350W SFX PSU and has an MSI GT 730 2 GB GDDR5 Single-Slot, Low-Profile GPU. Here's photo of it side by side with my budget dual E5-2670 behemoth! Below that is a photo of the guts of the mini server with the little fan I velcro'ed in to get rid of the heat that collected at the top of the case.

Are those v1 or v2 for the 2670s? Also running stock or OCed? Looks like a winner for a crazy low price. I might try and do 2 for work.

I got my setup at Natex. They have packages with V1's and V2's. Nothing is OC'd, they run at 3 GHz with all 32 threads at 100%. Libby at Natex is very nice to deal with.

Well I've built an even more frugal one now. I sold the original server setup, including the motherboard, CPUs and RAM on ebay for double what I paid back in late February, to play with multiple Ryzen 7 and 5 combos. But either returned or sold all of them, and have now just pretty much rebuilt this dual Xeon setup. Went even cheaper this time with a Intel s2600CPJ for $130, $40 for a pair of 6C/12T E5-2640s, and $65 for 32GB (8 x 4GB) Samsung DDR3-1333 Reg/ECC - so $235 all in on ebay. Looks the same except for the video card - I sold all my GTX 1060s and my GTX 1070 to miners for a good profit so I initially had my MSI GT 730 2GB GDDR5 in there for the time being. Still only 3 standoffs screwed in with plastic standoffs in the other holes and some twist ties holding them down. Works great, runs quiet and cool. Reused that pair of Noctua NA-RC7 Low Noise Adapter (LNA) cables to slow down the Cooler Master 212 fans while keeping the temps under 65C under constant 100% load. Now I have a Zotac GTX Mini 1080 in there to play with. Even with the drop from 16C/32 to 12C/24T it's still a powerful setup.
